Description: Dark wood with heavy legs. Two drawers in middle. Two doors above desk open to reveal compartments - 6 in right and 13 in left. Wooden wedge nailed to right compartment which may be an ink holder. Wire coil attached to board inside compartment. Several “cubbies” above doors. Space in back of desk to hand mail through. Desk may have had a leather desk top attached that has left black marks on surface.
Description: Made of walnut; shaped like a small boat. Sits in frame and rocks. Cradle has swan head and end like a ship’s stern. Frame is carved with flowers on each end and underneath. Donor info - made for Olive Perkins (Mrs. S.W. Smith, Jr.) of Warren, Ohio born August 17, 1858. Mattress made in 1924 for Samuel Smith Wilson. Following info from Samuel Smith Wilson who visited Museum in 1997. Olive Perkins married Judge Smith who rented the house between the Mount Desert Tavern and the Abraham Somes III house in Somesville. This house is no longer standing. She died near 1930. Description: 9" long; part unscrews to insert battery; date (ca. 1899) suggested by donor. Metal loop perhaps for hanging or affixing to belt. Found in apartment over old store in Seal Harbor. Marked patent pending.
Description: Pair of blue cobalt vases, 8" high. Vases given to Roscoe and Edna Hysom at their first Christmas (1930) by Kate (Lester) Pray, formerly Kate Heath. She and Julia (Mrs. A.C.) Fernald were sisters. Their mother, Judith Somes Heath (m. Capt. Hirshel Heath), had a house and hat shop between Nuttings and Peppers. Judith and Etta Somes Salisbury were sisters. Kate Heath Pray said that these vases were "very old" when she gave them to the Hysoms, parents of donor (Gail Hysom Reiber). [show more]

Description: Small camphene lamp of clear glass, Metal top. Chain on cap missing. Wick intact. Top tarnished. Camphene is turpentine. Often mixed with alcohol to burn.
Description: Tall carved with fruit and leaves. Easel moves up and down. Marked, “2799 A” and “2230” on back. Donor info - from John Allen Somes house. Piece needs glueing.
Description: Carved dark wood. Seat and back resemble scallop shells. Arms resemble sea serpents. Four legs resemble rough tree branches. Note on ribbon across seat indicated that chair may have been used in Daniel Somes's house. Ellsworth furniture restorer David Williams saw this chair; his research indicated that it may be a ninetheenth Venetian grotto chair, which was intended for hallways and aimed to be sold to visitors on their European tours. Description: Wooden cradle on rockers which are not fixed to the cradle. Once painted blue. Constructed with both dove tailed joints and nails. Head board has a narrow side piece creating a semi “hood”.
Description: Child sized chair. Maybe a doll chair. Bent wood back with strip of wood from chair seat to bent wood. Painted black with gold trim and angels drinking wine. Soldier boy on seat. Donor info - belonged to Lucie Pray, the daughter of Kate and Lester Pray of Somesville.
Description: Lid lifts to reveal shallow space. Two drawers underneath. Sits on four legs. Donor info - was given to donor as a wedding present 61 years ago. Donor used it for odds and ends and thread.
Description: Table folds out (hinges missing) and is supported by legs which turns. Four simply carved legs. Space where drawer should be is missing. Some wooden pegs still intact. Reinforced with nails. Dovetail joints. Donor info - this table from log house of Abraham Somes, first settler of Mt. Desert Island. Originally made without nails but with wooden pegs.
Description: Hand knitted, multi-colored rug, 21" x 29," made by Gail Reiber's great aunt, Linda Smity Foote of Pretty Marsh. The very small knitting needles used to make it are included in the rug.
