This is one of six 8 by 10 inch black and white photographs which are COPIES of Ballard photographs used in an exhibit from around 2001. The source of these prints is marked Jaylene. This photograph is of the Claremont Hotel from the water. There is a rowboat in the foreground. The float is in at the dock. The boat house is in the photo but without the deck it has now. The trees come up to the lawn hiding one house on the right side of the picture. Another house is more in view to the right of the hidden house. This is white with dormers. The original of this photo --and possibly the negative -- are in the collection of the Southwest Harbor Public Library. MDIHS does not have permission to reproduce this image. [show more]

This picture offers a clear view of the inside of a boat shop. Tools are hanging on the walls and the skiff in progress is perched on sawbucks. Ralph Stanley said this is a picture of Bob Rich's father, Cliff Rich. The other person is an adult named Eddie Hamblen. Meredith Hutchins and Emma Richards agree with Ralph's identification. Both women are members of the Rich family. Even though Paul Stubing said this is a photograph of Bobby Rich and his nephew working on a skiff in Bass Harbor, we have since found out through local people that it is Cliff Rich, Bob's father. Paul Stubing indicated that this is a photograph of the "William Keene" taken around 1938-1940. He said it shows loading fish meal probably for the Belfast chicken farms. The caption on the back of the photograph reads, "Loading Fish Meal at Southwest Harbor, Maine. 1938-1940 . William Keene". There are two men loading. On the left side of the picture are two bags waiting to be loaded (on the makeshift bridge).

Paul Stubing said the boat second from the left was designed by Stewart Warner and built for Rev. Malcolm McDuffie in Connecticut. Warner called it his "jackass rig" but wanted to try it out. There are four other sailboats visible in this picture. The one on the far left is a schooner with a dark hull and sails which look old, darkened over time. The boat in the right foreground is #3 International One Design. This picture has smaller dimensions than most of the other pictures in this collection. It measures 5inches by 6 and three quarters. This is a picture of a schooner underway towing a rowboat. The lighting is darker and the reflection of the sun on the water is giving it a sparkling effect. The scattered cloud formations offer an "artistic" contrast to the sailboat shrouded in shadows. This photograph is damaged. There is a crease which runs down the center which can be seen when it is held up.
