Description:
John Gilley would have been remembered for many things, but his death by drowning on October 12, 1896 between Northeast Harbor and Suttons Island and the memorial to him written by President Charles Eliot of Harvard insured his reputation.

Description:
The earliest settlers on Sutton's Island were Joseph Lancaster of Sullivan and Isaac Richardson, son of James Richardson of Mount Desert. William and Joseph Moore were early settlers, also. William later moved to Bear Island and was the first keeper of the Bear Island light. Sutton, from whom the island now takes its name, was, perhaps, a squatter.
