The five-place monoplane was manufactured during August 1929 by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, Burbank, California. It left the factory with a Pratt & Whitney Wasp B engine (S/N 1815) of 450 HP. The aircraft was loaned to Col. Lindbergh by Morgan Belmont (1892–1953), the son of August Belmont Jr. who built the Belmont Park Racetrack in New York, for Lindbergh’s 7000 mile South American trip. The Lindberghs took off from Bolling Field, the first stop on their trip (which had begun at Roosevelt Field on Long Island) on September 18, 1929. The Lockheed Vega model was designed by John Knudsen Northrop (1895-1981) and Gerard Freebairn Vultee (1900-1938) and manufactured by Lockheed Aircraft Limited and first flown on July 4, 1927. Lockheed delivered the Vega 5 in 1929." [show more]
