Description: In August of 2007, I began a project which I hope continues. Two of my students at Pemetic interviewed relatives working on MDI and wrote the information in a format which could be shared with anyone interested in how people earn their living on MDI. Their projects are in a white notebook in the library. One interview is of Deb O'Donnell who is an architectural project manager at the Jackson Laboratory in this period of rapid expansion at that facility. The other interview is of Peter Dolliver, a retired landscape gardener who ran a company called Deer Meadow in Southwest Harbor. The format the students used evolved out of what they thought would be of interest to someone seeking this information. The interview form, as well as, the release form are included in the book. Description: This notebook is a directory of the resources in the School House Archives which would be helpful for teachers to access when studying topics like: the fire of '47; Ways to Make a Living; Settlement; and Exploration. The pages are filled with information which has been used in the various exhibits the Historical Society has had over the years, as well as, notes on stickies which were ideas Charlotte and I brainstormed in our many conversations regarding educational outreach. Description: In 2007, I worked in the Sound School House on educational outreach projects. A priority in this effort was to look at our school district's learning goals/performance standards in grades 3-6 and select topical information that could be enriched by using the MDI Historical Society's artifacts. Maine's economy and industries which have brought money to the state in times past are two examples of likely topics. This notebook contains copies of reference material which was shared with Charlotte Singleton and myself by Willard Colson, the last manager of the Addison Packing Company in Southwest Harbor. Other contributing resources are credited in the material on the Sardine Industry in Maine, such as John D. Gilman's books:Masts and Masters; and Canned. James Warren's book "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000" proved to be invaluable too and is housed in the Schoolhouse's library as well. [show more]
