Pottery, Collection of 3 clay pieces made on GCI by Janet Roberts, showing how local indigenous groups, might have made a cooking pot; a) proto-bottom showing the coiling of clay rope to form a surface, 2.5" diam; b) continuing spiraling the clay rope upwards to make a wall, and a part cut away to better show the construction, 3.5" diam x 2" H; c) smoothed, decorated, and fired final pot with incised chevrons near the mouth, raked on the body, also net-like impresses on the body, and a rounded bottom, 5.5" L, 4.25" diam, 0.5" thick [show more]

Equipment. Drafting or drawing board. Wood board with a wooden ruler-like guide that slides out for use in making straight edges. Small black ink stamp of a schooner under sail at top of guide, and "Tarbell G. W" written in pencil on the back of the guide. A larger black ink print of same schooner under sail with inked signature "G. Tarbell" stamped on front center of the drafting board. To right of schooner stamp, upside down in script pencil "Gridley & Tarbell"; many tack holes and some faint pencil marks on board including "October 12, 1926". [show more]

Description:
Sword made from swordfish bill, with woven rope handle with remains of gilt in several spots, large red bow, and painted nautical scene. From left to right along the blade the painting shows a lighthouse, schooners, swordfish, seagull, flower, and a scroll with "Rena A. Percy", and date "July 19, 1908" towards the tip. Painting is peeling and flaking in some areas. On reverse, peeling paint remains near hilt but no evidence of painting on the rest of the blade. The Rena A. Percy was a schooner under Master Willis G.[E?] Bunker, with a crew of 14, (#200857?), either 78 or 46 Gross Tons, measuring 76.5/ 21.6/ 9.4. Built in 1904 in East Boothbay and used for dory trawling around Jonesport and elsewhere - (http://www.cranberryisles.com/photos/ci_notes.html - Cranberry Islands Notes by Chuck Liebow). Willis Bunker (1855-1915) was the uncle of donor's husband Linden "Tud" Bunker. Note states: "Sword came from Percy's house, Winslow Bunker's father." Description:
Carl G. Nelson, born in Sweden in 1898, came to the United States when he was five-years-old. A part-time resident of Cranberry Isles for 21-years and a full-time resident for 19-years following his retirement from teaching in Boston, he died Aug. 6, 1988, at the age of 91. Carl Nelson was a professional teaching artist. After retiring at 71, he bought a piece of land and settled in a house on Great Cranberry. He called his little estate "Tosh Park", Nelson is noted for his beautiful pen and inks, oils, casein paintings and handsome linoleum cuts. His work is currently represented in museums, gallerys, universities and both government and private collections. He has a long list of exhibitions to his credit at the Whitney Museum Biennials, Chicago Art Institute, Institute of Contemporary Art and the American Federation of the Arts to name oniy a few. He has had many one-man shows in New York, Boston, Cambridge, Fitchburg, Mass., and Atlanta. His works have also been reproduced in a number of books — from Herbert Agar's "Land of the Free", in 1935 to "American Drawings; Drawings of the Masters" by Bartlett H. Hayes in 1975. The documentary film "Of Endless Wonder" was made in 1969 by Betsy Seigal and David Westphall of Brandeis. The artist was born in Sweden, studied at the Art Student's League in New York, was a Tiffany Foundation scholar, and graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. [show more]
