|  Agricultural heritage of the Cranberry Isles Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Research, Jessica Duma, 2014-2016 while an Island Institute Fellow at GCIHS which produced an exhibition, presentations, video, and oral history recordings. Historical and modern day materials pertaining to Duma's Agricultural Heritage of the Cranberry Isles fellowship focusing on farming, agriculture, apples, the Island Ecology project, farm stand, and more in the Town of Cranberry Isles from 19th century to present. Duma worked with mentor Todd Little-Siebold (College of the Atlantic) and used GCIHS and other local historical collections to produce an exhibition, gather oral histories, and record videos of her experiences and research while residing on Great Cranberry Island as a two-year fellow and then served as part-time manager of GCIHS and part-time manager for the CIRT (affordable housing) program for the last year. This letter says " I have retired and moved from Boston to this island of unique design located just off the coast of Mt. Desert Island, Maine." He goes on about how tranquil and relaxing he finds the island and his deer neighbors. He ends the note with " In excellent health I am looking forward to retirement as a very exciting adventure." |  Nelson - Carl Nelson correspondence with a woman named Martha. Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Three letters from Carl Nelson to his friend Martha. In the first letter he is writing and just catching up with her about a mutual friend they had passing. In the second letter he is writing Martha thanking her for a jar of relish that she had sent him. In the top right corner he drew a picture of the jar that she sent. The letter starts by saying "How I can tell you how good the relish really is." He continues to write about how much he enjoyed the relish and how good it was. In the third letter he begins by saying " Dear 'Dickerson'" which is the name of Martha's relish mentioned in the second letter. In this letter he adds more praises on Martha's relish and other friendly writing. [show more] |

|  Nautical Chart of Ireland with annotations Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Nautical chart of Ireland, believed to be a chart Samuel Hadlock, Jr. used for his voyages to Europe while touring with Eskimos and sled dogs in 1820s. Chart appears to be a section of a larger chart. A note on reverse (probably by Douglas Macfarlan (donor's father)) states: "This old navigation map was found in a sea chest in the Preble House, Cranberry Isl. Maine in 1947." Samuel Hadlock built what became known as the Preble House for the woman he married while on his European tour. Zoom in to see various annotations on the chart. Many nun-buoys are marked in brownish/yellow, and there are several pencil annotations made along the coastline. This chart was scanned at Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) in 2016. A framed print of the full size NEDCC scan hangs in the Macfarlan/Preble house. Among myriad other contributions to the island, Polly (Pauline) ran the Whale's Rib gift shop for 46 years, and she worked at the Asticou Inn on MDI, too.
