|  William H. Ward Sr. Approval for Wharf Extension by the Selectmen of Tremont Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: "The Selectmen of the Town of Tremont, upon the application of William H. Ward of said Tremont for license to extend his wharf into the tide-waters of S.W. Harbor, within his limit of said Town, having given lawful notices of their meeting to examine the premises and give a hearing to all parties interested therein, and having met at this time and place appointed and for the purposes named in said notice, and having decided that the extension asked for would not be an obstruction to navigation nor an injury to the rights of others, in accordance with the Statutes of this State, do hereby issue this license unto the said William H. Ward authorizing him to extend his wharf into the tide-waters of said SouthWest Harbor; said extension not to exceed one hundred feet in width and three hundred feet in length, in a northeasterly direction from the pier now standing on said Ward's Shore, on the southwesterly side of said S.W. |  Green Mountain House - New and Open for Business. Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: Francis Hector Clergue built the Green Mountain House in 1883, adjacent to the old Mountain House on the summit of Green Mountain, now Cadillac Mountain, to, serve patrons of his Green Mountain Railway, a cog railroad, which chugged up the mountain from Eagle Lake. Both the old and new structures burned to the ground on August 2, 1884. “1884, August 2. The burning of a hotel on Green Mountain, Mount Desert, in the evening, was plainly seen from Belfast, at a distance of fifty miles.” – “History of the City of Belfast in the State of Maine: From Its First Settlement in 1770 to 1875” by Joseph Williamson, p. 241 – 1913. Frank Clergue immediately replaced this structure with a smaller hotel and his business continued as noted in the review below. "...A Good Hotel Is At The Summit, where persons desiring it can find pleasant accomodations for a longer or shorter stay. Crippen Company Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: The Tremont Masonic Lodge #77, after it was raised and enlarged, at the corner of Main Street and Clark Point Road in Southwest Harbor. The building to the right of it was the Odd Fellows Hall, destroyed by fire on March 27, 1922. The front entrance (as shown) was on Main Street. A lobby and auditorium with stage were on that floor. Town meetings and other gatherings were held in the auditorium for many years. The top floor held the lodge hall. At the far left is A. Gilley's Barber Shop, and, to the right of it is R.J. Lemont's Drug Store. The shield sign to the right of that marks the store of the "Live Yankee." The business on the bottom floor (access from Clark Point Road) of the Old Masonic Hall is the J.T. Crippen Co. - musical instruments and supplies. [show more] | |

|  Samuel Watson Herrick at His Store and Custom House Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: Earl Gott's house has had a varied history. It was begun on the Fernald Point Road, west of the Country Club house by Benjamin Gilley. His wife died before it was completed and he sold the house to Frank Higgins. Mr. Higgins never finished it and in 1883 he sold it to S. W. Herrick, who moved it to the junction of the Clark Point and High Roads and used it as a store for thirty-five years or more. After Mr. Herrick's death, his daughter sold the building to Earll Gott who moved it to his lot on the High Road where he occupies it as a home, having entirely remodeled and improved it.
