(A) Trailboard from a Friendship sloop. Letters visible: “BUILDER FRIENDSHIP, ME” on one side, and “WILBUR A. MORSE, BUILDER” on the other side. Carved with leaves and wavy line on both sides. Donor believes this could be the trailboard from one of Peter Richardson’s Friendship sloops. Richardson kept five Friendship sloops where Heliker LaHotan now stands (the old Stanley boatyard).(Trailboards are a pair of decorative boards at the bow of a sailboat, running from the figurehead back towards the hawsepipe.) (Measurements: 35"L x 6"H x 8.5"W)Note: On 10/14/16 Captain, historian, and boat builder Ralph Stanley visited GCIHS and commented on the trailboard. Ralph explained that donor's Friendship sloop, Old Baldy, was bought from its original owner; Kathy Newman owns it now. Jarvis Newman restored it. Stanley believes that the sloop that the trailboard came from was Little Flirt. (Apparently, the intended name was Alert, but William Doane Stanley had also named his boat Alert.) Eventually, Little Flirt had Sweet Pea painted on her stern. Whoever gave Lou Alert’s trailboard, likely found it in the field by Lewis Stanley’s boat yard (Ralph Stanley’s Uncle Lew) after the boat was destroyed and the ruins put in the field. He believes a full trailboard would have included the date made, 1904, and would have had an eagle’s head on the end. Ralph will check and see if Kathe Walton has the head.(B) Stanley cemetery wooden post. A broken post with carved top intact for exhibit purposes and for use as a model for new fence posts for the 2014 restored Stanley cemetery. (There are several more broken fence posts currently at the cemetery.) (Measurements: 41"L x 6" Diameter)(C) Powder horn from donor's family. Lovely, plain, unornamented horn which Donor used with her muzzle loading rifles and as a prop in a play. Has string attached by screw; two drilled holes; hollow. It was probably acquired in Ohio. No direct connection to GCI other than Lou Millar's use in her long and interesting life and it’s a neat artifact. (Measurements: 14.5"L x 3.5"H x 3"W) [show more]

Gifted by Hugh Dwelley in Summer 2007. The bulk of the document is a copy of a letter to the Ellsworth American written by Rufus George Frederick Candage. The letter was written in 1891, but in the letter he is reminiscing about a two-week vacation to the Duck and Bakers Island in 1841. He writes about a barn, cattle, vegetables, hay, butter, cheese, eggs, fowls on Great Duck, and sheep on Little Duck. At that time the family of John Bartlett was living on Duck Island, although the Duck Islands were claimed by Mr. Gilley. Candage also remembers a trip to see the Bakers Island lighthouse. The letter is preceded by an excerpt from the book "The Descendants of James Candage/Cavendish of Blue Hill, Maine" and some notes on the Bartlett family and the letter made by Ralph W. Stanley. The document also includes a letter from Hugh Dwelley as President of the Islesford Historical Society to Mr. Gil Bunker in reference to a visit that the Bunker Family Association of America planned to make to the Cranberry Islands. These two interviews with lifelong GCI resident Gaile Colby were conducted by Phil Whitney and Josh Hastings in July 2018. They mostly discuss houses along The Lane, Harding Point, Heliker-Lahotan and Jimmies Point Road. Arvard helped a lot with certain houses on Harding Point Road and certain houses on The Lane in the second interview. Two sessions 7/22/18 and 7/29/18. Several segments of the July 29 interview were transcribed 2018 and include the visit of Vice President Nelson Rockefeller to the Cranberry Club on GCI; the wakes of Rena Bunker Willis' widow (1940) and Henry Bunker (1941) held in the Richman house; the 1961 fire at the Sherman house. Two DVDs made by Northeast Historic Films in Bucksport, ME, of a 16MM film and three documents. A letter from David Wesphal, Acadia Film/Video, GCI, ME, 17Feb1989 to Robertina (Bobby) Gray, Cranberry Island Library President; and a newspaper clipping dated Feb. 16, 1989 (newspaper unidentified) discussing the Northeast Historic Film archive in Blue Hill; and a film log for each of the seven reels. Westphal's letter speaks about the sugar tin can that Gray brought to him containing seven 400-ft reels of film which Wesphal titled Sugar 1, 2, 3 etc. Westphal suggests the film go to the Blue Hill Film depository for long term storage. He says the whole film runs about 1 and a half hours, was shot at slow speed (silent speed). Reel 1: Lobster-Herring (some on CI). Reel 2: Duck Island, A Few Yachts, Robinson Mtn. Reel 3: Bob in Punt, Al and Rene, Yojo, Bathing Group, Lorae, Isl and Pine Isl, Bob in Lorae. Reel 4: Morse, Panorama, Reception, Picnic Bakers, Anna Arm. Reel 5: Valley Cove, Teacup Inn, Mt Road, Jordan Pond, Grand Pre, Lena at Bakers. Reel 6: Bemesa and Yacht Races. Reel 7: Bathing, Sammy Sanford, Natives on Wharf, Eber at P.O., Enoch, Capt Rice, Kelly and Boy Radts. The leader on the digital copy of the film reads: The David Westphal Collection, Acc 0702, Browning Home movies, transferred from 16mm master by Northeast Historic Film 12 June 1996. At GCIHS this film is called the Lloyd Hayes-Bob Browning video and is believed to have been taken ca. 1929-1931; www.gcihs.org/1/photos/lloyd_hayes.html: Bob Browning donated home movies made by Lloyd Benjamin Hayes (1880-1943), and that Lloyd and Rachel Hayes bought and refurbished the old Spurling home, ran a boarding house 1934-1937, and made these home movies.
