The front shows five windows and door on left. One chimney at front end of roof. Building sits on stone foundation. Bare trees surround mill. Photograph of Indian Cemetery. Taken at Somesville in 1843 by Benj. Joy, Ellsworth. Note: Most likely taken by Benj. Joy, Jr. and is a photograph of a photograph; place probably somewhere in the Andes. The Abbe Museum also has a copy as does the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Smithsonian says date is c.1923. Original record said this was taken at Somesville in 1843 by Benj. Joy, Ellsworth. New information received on Dec. 29, 2014 implies this photo was originally taken by a woman explorer, Harriet Chalmers Adams in the early twentieth century. U.S. Model 1842 Musket. .69 Caliber. Charge: 70gr ffg, paper cartridge. Marked, “Harper’s Ferry 1844 (may be 1849)”. Percussion. Smooth bore. Metal ramrod under barrel. Stud for affixing bayonet under muzzle. Visitor info - Springfield Service Rifle, made in Harper’s Ferry. Standard infantry arm. Designed as smoothbores, many were later rifled. Many saw use in early months of Civil War. This piece may be a Mexican War piece, or may be a relic from Bloodless Aroostook War. [show more]
