Woman's Literary Club Collection Northeast Harbor Library	Document, Other Documents	Organizations, Civic Other People					Woman's Literary Club Collection Northeast Harbor Library Identifier: nehl-6888 Type: Document, Other Documents Subject: Organizations, Civic Other People Description: The records in the Woman’s Literary Club Collection includes manuscripts, typescripts, letters, annual meeting notes, scrapbooks, news clippings, photographs, meeting programs, photographs, and some objects. Belle Smallidge Knowles and Stella P. Hill, two college-educated women living in Northeast Harbor in the early 20th century, thought the community could benefit from a woman’s club. The Woman's Literary Club of Northeast Harbor held its first meeting in 1908 and quickly gained membership. Club members actively wrote papers (many award-winning) ranging from poetry to local family histories and biographies of famous artists. Members also participated in community improvement projects, and attended state and national women’s club meetings. The club disbanded in 2000 due to dwindling membership. [show more]

With three loose handwritten pages inserted. One is list of children for Hannah Lopaus(?) who moved to Mount Desert July 12th 1799 and had 10 children and includes list of 9 children born to Hannah's daughter Nancy Lopauss Richardson Clark, one of whom was Meltiah P. Richardson (spouse of Carrie Stanley Richardson). The second loose page is a petition for a fish weir at Thrumcap for Enoch B. Stanley and W.D.(?) Stanley in January 1891. The third loose page is Permission for a fish weir with full description dated Feb. 7, 1891. (B) Maroon fold-over wallet (empty).
