Taped to the back of the painting are a newspaper clipping and a typed copy of the clipping: BAR HARBOR TIMES Wednesday, July 5, 1933 SOMESVILLE MILL IS BURNED Early yesterday morning the Old Mill at Somesville burned in a fire of undetermined origin. This historic landmark owned jointly by Mrs. John Somes and Mrs. Geo. Somes has been in the Somes family for four generations. It was built nearly 100 years ago by the first John Somes, a pioneer on the island. Lumber, long and short shingles were sawed at the mill and it was operated by John Somes up to about eight years ago. The remnant of the little old schooner which John Singer Sargent painted when he visited the island some dozen years ago, escaped the fire. The mill will not be rebuilt. [show more]
