Weighing about 5 pounds, this jacket is likely made of Kapok fibre from the Ceiba pentandra tree; which is lighter in weight than the original cork life jackets and much more comfortable and pliable. Unlikely to still float. Donor unknown, likely used in the early 1900s.

Metal handle pushed whistle down much like a bellow. Forces air out of tin whistle at top. Air comes in through hole underneath. Hook keeps whistle closed. Brass tacks hold leather to wood. Attached tin plate reads, “J.H. Rowe Co. General agents Gloucester, Mass. Pat. Pending”.

Ship hardware. Collection of four large brass/metal artifacts recovered by Wesley Bracy Jr. (a.k.a. "Junior:) from local waters while scuba diving 1970-1980s. Items were either loaned or donated to GCIHS in 2000. (A): Artifact, letter "A" metal plate, from tug Astro an ocean-going tug towing a barge that ran ashore on Mt. Desert Rock 1902. Astro sank but barge okay. (B): Bow bit from the Ara, Deane's ocean-going private yacht that sank 1926 off Little Duck Island; (C): cleat; (D:) fire nozzle possibly from Deane's yacht. Description:
This running light and the attached fabric were salvaged by Mr. Tebbetts who served as the Quartermaster on the Uss Haigler YTB-327 which vessel towed the wreck of the K-14 into Bunker's Cove on July 4, 1944. Mr. Tebbetts has also furnished copies of Photos and testimony as to his role in the salvage operation. (Small wood sample, given by Helen Merrill in August 1996.)
