Now called The Redbook--originally called Directory and Hand Book--these social registers list residents and their contact information, cottage locations and owners, businesses, various transportation schedules, tide charts, advertisements, and important phone numbers. The first book published in 1912 by Stella L. Hill was green, all the rest are red. The Redbook celebrated its 100 anniversary in 2012 and is still produced to this day. [show more] | |||

Negative and 11"x14" photo of Lewis (Lew) Stanley's boatyard located on the pool during the wintertime with the pool frozen. The boatyard was later sold to Heliker and LaHotan and they tore it down because it was a hazard and in rough shape. Mickey Macfarlan who said that towards the end of his life Lew Stanley was hard up for money and could no longer repair the boatyard. Mickey said Lew was always complaining that people were stealing from the boatyard - the second floor of it was chock full of all sorts of things. Ward of said Tremont for license to extend his wharf into the tide-waters of S.W. Harbor, within his limit of said Town, having given lawful notices of their meeting to examine the premises and give a hearing to all parties interested therein, and having met at this time and place appointed and for the purposes named in said notice, and having decided that the extension asked for would not be an obstruction to navigation nor an injury to the rights of others, in accordance with the Statutes of this State, do hereby issue this license unto the said William H. Ward authorizing him to extend his wharf into the tide-waters of said SouthWest Harbor; said extension not to exceed one hundred feet in width and three hundred feet in length, in a northeasterly direction from the pier now standing on said Ward's Shore, on the southwesterly side of said S.W. Apparently, there are only … two buildings left. The stores were built in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were constructed of wood with a cut-out wedge for the entrance and windows. They are 9' tall and 40' in diameter. In the late 1970s, the chain disbanded due to financial problems." - “Giant Food: Misc. |  Southwest Motor Inn Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: The Motel, named the "Southwest Motor Inn," was built in 1970 and ran until 1980. New Motel Planned For Area "Southwest Harbor - Three businessmen here have combined resources to build a new 32-unit motel on Route 102 overlooking Norwood Cove. Foundation work is now being done and the motel will be ready for occupancy by June 1, said David Benson, one of the three partners. Druggist George McVety and lawyer Frederick Burrill are Benson's Associates in the business venture. The quarter-million-dollar motel will have two levels, with an outside corridor, plus an office and quarters for the manager. Hanson is acting as contractor for the project. The major subcontractor is John Goodwin, who is handling concrete work. The motel will be built entirely of concrete blocks. (Ray) Richardson before it was sold it to Clarence Reddish. The Richardsons had a business, The Maplewood Lunch, just down the road from Echo Vista on the water side of the road. | |||
