Description: Photo, b&w snapshot, Wilfred Bunker (looking up) and Clarence Beal on board their lobster smack, Silas McClune. Per Ralph Stanley August 2016: The Silas McClune was built for the A. C. McClune Co. in Rockland. They were lobster dealers. Beal & Bunker bought the boat in the 1950s. They had the wet wells plugged and used it as a freight boat. They caught hake fish at GCI and took it to Vinalhaven for sale. Buster Rice was the captain. Beal & Bunker sold the boat to Arnold Allen who had a seining outfit. Ralph believes the boat went ashore and might be beneath the sewer plant in Southwest Harbor. (See also 2018.416.2824C.) [show more]
Description: Collection of 27 photographs, accompanied by two letters and a manila envelope. The photographs document the arrival of the freighter Toronto in the Great Harbor, and the subsequent launching of the International One Design (International Class) sailboats in May 1938. These photographs were likely taken by Robert E. Peabody, of Peabody & Lane, the shipping firm that served as the American agents for the Toronto (the freighter that delivered the boats). Most of these photographs are printed on matte paper with a slightly pebbled texture, but some are glossy and appear to be copy prints made from the negatives used for the matte photographs. She adds: "I hope these will add to some nostalgic collection - if not yet historic - and will be enjoyed by some owners of these boats." Description: Two masted schooner at wharf in back of Fernald’s store (purchased in 1887 from A.J. Whiting); later Port-in-a-Storm bookstore, at low tide. Loading ramp extends from second story door in back of building. Somes House Inn to the right. Port in a Storm later was used as an art gallery.
Description: A set of 470 black and white negatives that are part of the Charles Butt Ballard Negative Collection, purchased from Paul Stubing in 1998-99. All of the negatives in this accession are related to the Webber's Cove Boat Yard, East Blue Hill, Maine. These negatives were never catalogued when the original purchase came to the historical society. It was decided on 10/21/2014 to keep these negatives as a part of the W.H. Ballard collection but that each negative would not be given an object id. If there is further interest in any of the detailed negatives, further work will be needed to identify and catalogue each distinct image.
