Description: In July 1888, a group of young people from Philadelphia set off for a holiday in Maine, destination Mount Desert Island. This privately published travel journal recounts with humor their adventures during those days of fun and discovery. This volume belongs to Sarah Carter and contains 36 sepia photographs. The entire journal (cover image) as well as the individual photographs have been scanned. From the Preface: "As the summer of 1888 drew near, some young friends put their heads together to arrange a pleasant trip, and realizing that it is not good for man (and consequently woman) to be alone, they decided to take pity on a few of the sons of Adam, of George Fox persuasion, inviting them to join in an excursion to Mt. Description: The Green Mountain Railway was finalized in 1883 by Frank H. Clergue of Bangor, Maine. It was 6,300 feet long and started on the shores of Eagle Lake. Its cost was $110.000. It closed down in 1893 after only 10 years of operation. (From Item 2162).

It shows, with lesser emphasis, the place names: Bar Harbor, SW Harbor, NE Harbor. Contains enlarged window showing Mount Desert Village (Somesville). Description of MDI mentions the incorporation in 1838 of "Seaville," a group of islands that included Bartlett's, Robinson's and Hardwood Islands in 1838. This incorporation was repealed in 1859. Description: Faded yellow photo album. The back still has some bright yellow, but the front and binding are worn and faded. There is a metal emblem on the cover, 1”x2”. There is a metal clasp on the sides of the back and front covers, but it is missing a clasp to connect them. The back cover has circular metal fastenings in each corner. The album has 22 leaves with spaces for photos on each side. There are photos in all but the very last space. The inside of the cover and the first page are white and textured. Written on the second page is “Annie Walker, December 25, 1882.” Printed opposite is “Photographs” in large eloquent letters on a scroll design. Description: From a note, possibly as display label, inserted in the notebook: Charles Eliot's notes on the early explorers of the New England coast. This notebook was probably compiled in 1881-1883. Some of the notes were used in S. A. E's "Mt. Desert" Two pages have been cut out from the start of the notebook. Pages have been numbered with a sequential stamp. The first remaining page is 5. The last numbered page is 288. In most of the notebook there is writing only on the odd pages - the right page of an open two page spread. A single detached page found in the notebook is entitled, "Summary". This page is entered separately as 005.17.20 27 x 23 cm. [show more]
