Description: Houses. Architectural and folk history. This updated 2018 report of investigation summarizes 2013-2017 research into nine Cape-style houses spawned by the 2013 discovery and repatriation of four ca. 1820-1830s shoes concealed in the chimney wall of the parsonage house of the Great Cranberry Congregational Church. The 2014 and 2018 revised report was submitted to the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, Acadia NPS, and GCIHS. Revised version is twenty-two pages with photos and bibliography as of January 18, 2018, and includes findings of a 2015 dendrochronology project. This study of the parsonage Cape-style house with its neighboring Cape-style houses and the separate 2013 study of the nearby ca. 1826 Preble house documents a cluster of historic island houses on the verge of becoming unrecognizable through remodeling. Research reveals folk practices, the oeuvre of local 19th-century house builders; Cape-style design innovations; granite and lumber sources; dendrochronology study; and early 19th-century Bulger and Spurling family histories. One of the cape houses was the birthplace of Civil War Medal of Honor General Andrew Barclay Spurling.; the Preble House was his boyhood home. See also concealed shoe research: 2013.252.1979. According to WHO, in 1980, before widespread vaccination, measles caused an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year. However, in the recent years, the once eradicated disease started resurfacing in countries like New Zealand, Australia, and United States (CDC). Description: The Callendar House was the first summer cottage built of brick in Bar Harbor. When this photograph was taken in 2016, the Jackson Lab owned this structure which is located on the Schooner Head Road just outside of Bar Harbor. The history of Bar Harbor is the history of the rich and famous and the story of the Callendar House fits right into this history. The imposing “cottage” was built in 1901 for Mrs. John Callendar Livingston, a member of the prominent and incredibly prosperous Livingston family, by Fredrick Savage. The structure was Savage’s most formal design and also the most expensive (partly because just before it was completed in 1901, the entire building burnt leading to a near complete rebuilding). Savage, himself, was a native of Northeast Harbor and the vast majority of his work consisted of cottages and hotels, showing the rise of Bar Harbor’s place as a “summer colony”. Savage built cottages in many styles including several prominent Queen Anne and Shingle Style structures showcasing the dominant design trends of the late 19th century and early 20th century. The Callendar House, however, can be seen as firmly colonial revival in design and was the first summer “cottage” built with brick. At the time of its construction it was praised by the Bar Harbor Record for both its refinement and its modernity. In 1992, the Callendar House was purchased by the Jackson Lab at a foreclosure auction. (Source: Maine Preservation). [show more]

It is of a sailboat race off Northeast Harbor. The race committee boat is to the right of the print, below the Bear Island Lighthouse. Copies 2 and 3 are the same photograph but enlarged to 11 by 14 inch.

They are replacing the wooden planking and ribs on the port side towards the stern. The motor launch is white with a dark stern. Looking under the stern two boats are partially visible with large numbers on their sides. Tools and scraps of wood are visible in the work area around and under the boat being repaired. [show more]
Description: This 11 by 14 inch black and white photograph is a copy of a Ballard photograph. The print is of the Northeast Harbor Fleet dock and clubhouse. There is a beached A boat named the Nevis by the side of the dock. An adult is working on the hull, it looks like he is painting the bottom. Three other males, of various ages, are by the boat. In front of the clubhouse are two men talking. One is sitting astride a bicycle. There are other bicycles near these two men. Nautical flags are flying and there is an old car parked on the road. The car is from the late 40's early 50's vintage. Judging from the subjects, the car and the size of the clubhouse, this photo was taken before the late 1960's. [show more]

There is a male mountain climber possibly between 50 and 65 years of age with his back to the photographer. He is holding on to a metal rung on a trail encircling large bolders. This could be the Precipice Trail.
Description: This 11 by 14 inch black and white photo is a copy of a Ballard. The location of the original is not known. It's possible that this photograph was used in an exhibit at Charles Butt's home in 2002.
Description: This is a 6 by 8 inch photo in grayscale mounted on the back of a poster in a wooden frame. The frame measures 9 and 1/2 by 11 and 1/2 inches. A U.S. Flag flies from the back mast. There is a bow spread. Anchored boats can be seen in the background. People are around the exposed hull and on the wharf. It looks old. The frame is damaged too. Pieces of the top layer of wood are chipped off. The paper backing on the reverse side has green and black lettering and the name "Addie Smith" is written in pencil in cursive. There is a single piece of wood in the center of the back running from the top and bottom sections of the frame. It is held in by two nails. Description: This 10 by 7 and 1/2 inch black and white photograph is mounted on frayed gray cardboard-like paper. This is a photo of the Diston House on Manchester Point, Northeast Harbor. The label on the backside indicates that Brown Mountain is in the background.
Description: This black and white photograph is approximately 12 by 9 and 3/4 inches. It is mounted on gray cardboard-like paper which has a corner missing on the upper righthand side. The gift inventory list identifies it as " Flock of seagulls in flight - hand tinted". There is a crayon mark on the lower right hand side of the print.
Description: This 6 by 10 inch black and white photograph is a duplicate of #001-71.4. That picture is labeled Northeast Harbor rather than Southwest Harbor like this photo is. I believe Northeast Harbor is more accurate. There are 10 or 11 gaff-rigged sailboats sailing. In the background are the mountains of Mt. Desert Island. This photograph is fuzzy and has two spots on the upper lefthand side.
Description: This black and white photograph is approximately 7 and 1/4 inches by 4 and 1/2 inches. It is mounted on gray cardboard-like paper. The label on the backside is "Mt. Desert Island". The gift inventory list indicates that this photograph is a copy of a Ballard print of Thunderhole on Acadia's Park Loop Road.
Description: This 10 and 1/4 by 7 and 3/4 inch black and white photograph is mounted on gray cardboard-like paper. Nine becalmed sailing vessels are in the foreground. A rowboat and part of a sailing hull are on the right edge of the foreground. Land is visible behind the sailboats, as is one more sailing vessel. The shadows of the sails are reflections in the water.
Description: This 6 and 1/4 by 9 and 3/4 inch, black and white photograph is mounted on light gray cardboard-like paper. The foreground of the picture is dark so the sailboat is a black shadow and it is impossible to make out the details of the boat's hull. There are black clouds in the sky and a piece of land in the background. On the backside, the words, "Northeast Harbor" are written, as well as, "19431/Guide".
Description: This 10 and 1/4 by 6 and 3/4 inch black and white photograph is mounted on gray cardboard-like paper. The rock formations in the foreground are black. There are points of land on the horizon where the sun can be seen rising. The label on the backside is "Mt. Desert ?".
Description: This black and white photograph measures appoximately 6 by 10 inches. There are about 10 gaff-rigged sailboats in the background. Mountains are in the distant background behind the sailboats. The photograph is faded and has a dark gray spot, just left of the top center. It is mounted on faded white cardboard-like paper. On the back, the words "Northeast Harbor" appear.
Description: This is an 8 by 10 inch black and white photograph mounted on gray cardboard. It is difficult to determine where this photograph was taken. It seems as if it was taken on a wooded knoll looking out to the ocean. There are points of land jutting out in the background and it looks as if there is a sandy inlet at the base of the knoll. The original inventory list indicates that "Merry Christmas in Gold Lettering" is written on the gray matte. However, those words do not appear now. [show more]
Description: This is a 6 by 10 inch black and white photograph mounted on a gray cardboard. It appears to be a duplicate of object #001-71.1. The backside is labeled as in #001-71.1. That is "race, Somes Sonnel, Northeast Harbor". Again, the mountains of Mount Desert Island are in the background but it is questionable as to whether the race is on Somes Sound. (ALW) The photo is faded and cloudy but does not have the green spots on the left as #001-71.1 does. [show more]
Description: This is an 8 by 12 inch, black and white photograph mounted on white board. On the backside, it is labeled in ink as "race, Somes Sonnel, Northeast Harbor". The photograph definitely has the mountains of Mount Desert Island in the background, but I question whether it is Somes Sound which I think is what the person who wrote the label intended to write. (ALW) There are 10 gaff-rigged sailboats racing. The race committee boat can be seen in the background, off to the right side of the photo. This is in poor condition because it appears faded and has green spots on the left side of the photo. [show more]
