Cast iron ship's bell
Great Harbor Maritime Museum
Description:
Cast iron ship's bell with partial detached yoke. The bell has a large crack and is covered with rust. The bell was retrieved by Harold Walls (1913-2000), a fisherman from Otter Creek, who retrieved it around 1958 or 59. Walls went fishing after a large storm, and found many buoys and lines tangled together. Instead of dealing with them at sea, he towed the tangle to Otter Creek to deal with it. This bell was found in the tangle. It is not clear how the bell ended up in the ocean and the exact location of the tangle is not now known. Temporary image [show more]

Wild Island Farm seed collection
Great Cranberry Island Historical Society
Description:
Seeds. Collection of Polly Storey's Wild Island Farm seeds including three green wooden display boxes (A, B, and C) (with lids attached by brass chains) containing white and green paper seed packets ready for sale, and two shoebox-size cardboard boxes (D and E) with seed packets. There is also a folder of materials (F) relating to Wild Island Farm, the seed business, and a newspaper article “Polly Forbes Johnson Storey: A Spirit of Independence” (Bar Harbor Times, October 21, 1976). (See also GCIHS 1000.0.965 for another undated article about seeds business.) Seed packets indicate crop years were 1972 and 1992; but many packets have no crop years identified. Most of the seeds originated in Maine, but some are from Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Yugoslavia. Polly Storey’s daughter, Elizabeth Selim, recalls her mother germinating wildflower seeds on the property and remembers her mother’s seed business. Two of the green seed display boxes (A and B) contain packets of tree seeds. On the interior lids of these two boxes is a printed pamphlet: Tree Seeds from Maine* (and other exotic parts of the world), with text on why and how to plant tree seeds. Seed packets inside these two boxes include balsam fir, mountain ash, white pine, sugar maple, paper birch, and white spruce - all "Packed by Wild Island Farm, Cranberry Isles, Maine 04625." Balsam fir (Abies balsama): Purity 93%, Germination 50% March 1994; Crop year 1992, Origin Maine. Mountain Ash (Sorbus americana): Purity 80%, Germination 30% March 1994, Crop year 1992, Origin Tennessee. White Pine (Pinus strobus): Purity 98%, Germination 90% March 1994, Crop year 1991, Origin Maine. Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum): Purity 97%, Germination 55% March 1994, Crop Year 1992, Origin Pennsylvania. Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera): Purity 85%, Germination 95% March 1994, Crop year 1992, Origin Wisconsin. White Spruce: (Picea abies): Purity 98%, Germination 47.5% March 1992, Crop year 1990, Origin Yugoslavia. Several types of tree seed packets have bar-coded labels on reverse: “Acadia Shops, (seed name), $2.00”. The third green display box (C) contains mostly flower packets, but there are also four packets of White Cedar seeds in it. The interior lid of this box has hand drawn text and lovely small watercolor sketches of the types of flower seed packets it contains. White Cedar (Thuja occidentales): Text, printing and ‘packed by’ are slightly different: Purity 95%, Germ. 60% March 1973, Crop Year 1972, Origin Maine: Packed by Wild Island Seeds, The Farm House, Cranberry Isles, Maine 04625. Flower packets: Daisy (Chrysanthemum leucanthemum): No date packed etc. Blue Flag (Iris versicolor): No date packed etc, but an Acadia Shops sticker (no bar code) $1.50 on reverse. Evening Primrose (Onothera biennis): No date packed etc. Beach Pea (Lathyrus japponics): Empty envelope, no crop year etc. Lupine (Lupinus perennis): No crop year etc. Cattail (Typha latifolia): No crop year etc., sealed but seems empty. Blueberry (Vaccinium augustifolium): No date crop year etc., envelope stained. There are 5 small manila envelopes with handwritten labels: Beach Pea, Wild Rose, Blue Flag, Seaside Goldenrod, and Bunchberry. Inside a sixth, larger manila envelope (labelled in red ink: ‘Begonia seeds’) are 5 folded, white paper packets, only two of which are labelled: "Pink and white from Christmas cactus pot", and "Deep Red". Cardboard boxes: First box (D) labeled “M.D. Apothecary” contains 59 green and white paper packets of Rhubarb (Rhabarbarum) seeds, “Packed by Wild Island Farm, Cranberry Isles, Maine 04625”, no crop year etc., but Acadia Shops sticker (no bar code) $1.50 on reverse. Documents (F): 1970 to 1995, including 1992 correspondence with Aroostook Testing and Consulting Laboratory in Presque Isle, Maine, shows Polly submitted several varieties of tree seeds from Cranberry Island for testing and received germination rates for each. Information on how and when to gather seeds. Statements and business registration information. Newspaper article “Polly Forbes Johnson Storey: A Spirit of Independence” (Bar Harbor Times, October 21, 1976). Several generous islanders from Great Cranberry and Little Cranberry (Islesford) purchased this collection which now resides at GCIHS, catalogued as 2018.419.2285 through 2289. All documents except the advertisements and bill heads referred to in 2018.419.2288 have been scanned. (Descriptions for this collection were provided by Joanne Fuerst, Wikhegan Books. GCIHS welcomes your transcriptions or comments on individual documents: info@gcihs.org.) [show more]

The other photo is older, possibly late 1950s, as is evidenced by the cars and the absence of some of the newer building in the first photograph. Sawyer's Lobster Pound

Description:
Charlotte Gill (posing in the photo above) grew up in Southwest Harbor. In 2011, she took over a dilapidated ice cream stand (known by some as Frosty Bob's) located between Southwest Harbor and Acadia National Park’s Seawall Campground. She opened Sawyer’s Lobster Pound, named after a former beau. When the relationship broke up, Gill renamed the place after herself.

Description:
Bar Harbor Times, Wednesday, June 6, 1928 LOBSTER POUNDS ARE POPULAR PICNIC RESORTS Wonderland at Seawall and Abel's Pound at Richville Opened for 1928 Season The picnic lobster pound is a new and very popular form of beach resort. Lobster pounds, dammed-up pools or coves similar to salt water swimming pools, have been used for many years for the purpose of keeping large quantities of live lobsters for long periods. Within the last few years it has been found that a lobster pound that happens to be situated on a picturesque piece of rocky shore backed up by spruce groves, and is supplied with an open fire and iron kettle makes an ideal picnic place. The two places on Mt. Desert that are primarily pleasure resort pounds are both new, and are both so busy that their boiling kettles work at capacity during the summer. One is ''Wonderland", Isaac Stanley's pound at Seawall. Mr. Stanley's property consists of 147 acres of high wooded land with a shore front a mile and three quarters in length, including Bennett's Cove, Mullin's Cove, and Bennett's Cove Head between them. That point is the extreme southeastern tip of Mount Desert Island and is thrust out into the open ocean where Long Ledge runs off into the section of Atlantic Ocean between Great Gott's Island and Great Cranberry Island. The pound is made by a dam across one corner of Bennett's Cove. Instead of putting lobsters into it, they are kept in a car floating in the pound, and the pound is stocked with cod and haddock, so that guests can get their own dinner with hook and line if they prefer that kind to lobster. There is a large log cabin dining-room, sealed inside with fragrant cedar boards, for use on days when it is too cool or too damp to picnic on the beach or in the spruce grove. Besides the log cabin there are several other smaller cabins, and a house-boat which is hauled up on the beach inside the pound, which are let to guests as overnight camps or as cottages for the week or season. One of the cabins, just being completed, is built completely of cedar which was growing in trees a few weeks ago. "Wonderland" is unique in several ways, with its remarkably cool location, its moss-carpeted woodland of big spruce, and its peculiar beach formation of huge sea-smoothe granite rocks, and it attracts many visitors by sea and land. On one Sunday last summer Mr. Stanley counted nearly three hundred cars at his place during the day. Not all of the people who visit the Seawall pound go there to buy lobsters; many of them merely wish to enjoy an hour on a bit of Mount Desert's rugged shore. They are just as welcome in any case, and customers and guests meet with the same real "down east" hospitality. Mr. Stanley's place is already opened for the season, and on the last two Sundays entertained quite a number of visitors. Henry Abel's park is situated farther around on the western side of Mt. Desert, at Richville, a little cove between Bass Harbor and Goose Cove. Mr. Abel has one of the fine little headlands of the Island, which for purposes such as his, are rapidly decreasing in number as the shoreline is sold for summer estates. In some ways this spot is like Wonderland. It has a bluff granite promontory with a little harbor on one side, and a seawall beach on the other, and a growth of big evergreens with little grass and moss glades among the trees comes down to the landward edge of the ledges; but whereas Mr. Stanley's pound is on the open ocean, this one is on the shore of Bluehill Bay which is a deep and wide, but generally smooth, expanse of water. It has a beautiful panorama of the string of islands which some five miles out form the western and southern breakwater that shelters the bay. Back of the beach at the east of the point is Gundlow Pond a curious little precisely skow-shaped salt pool that rises and falls with the tide, although it is separated from the ocean by a hundred and fifty feet of high-heaped seawall. Abel's Pound has a houseboat hauled up among the trees, and several cabins, which are used to serve lobster dinners in inclement weather, or for overnight or weekly parties. Then it has an outfit of rustic seats and tables along the shore and through the grove. The park furnishes boats and tackle to its guests so that they can enjoy the very good deep-water fishing to be had just off the shore. Mr. Abel makes a specialty of taking care of his quests in any weather, or at any time of the day or evening, as he has found that people who are on the Island for a week-end of for a limited vacation period must utilize their time fully without waiting for ideal days and nights. Southwest Harbor Public Library
Description:
In 1940 Southwest Harbor Motor Co. was the only AAA filling station in Southwest Harbor. Their phone number was 51-2. The brick building was converted to offices to rent in 1986-1987. The U.S. Post Office opened in the building on June 2, 1987. Ralph Warren Stanley (1929-2021) attended school in the elementary school on the present ellipse (behind the Gilley Plumbing building on the left of this photograph) before it was moved across the street to become a fire station and now [2011] the police station/town office. When the bank was housed at the Southwest Harbor Motor Co. Ralph would take his penny bank there to be unlocked and have the money deposited in his bank account. The lady in the bank would show him the big safe where is money would be kept. – Ralph Warren Stanley 01/17/11 Marion E. Newman (1890-1976), Mrs. Frederick Walter Wescott at the time, owned a yellow Stutz Bearcat that was destroyed in the fire. Marion was known for having invested in Coca Cola stock and holding on to it when others thought it worthless and sold their stock. – Ralph Warren Stanley, 03/31/14 [show more]

The store, on Clark Point Road, was T.W. Jackson & Son, an IGA store. “R.B. Jackson [Richard Benson Jackson (1893-1959)] is having a building erected on his lot lately purchased from P.L. Sargent. A filling station and other conveniences will be established there, and the extensive grounds opened as a parking place. This will be a great convenience to the customers of the Jackson market.” – The Ellsworth American, Wednesday, April 15, 1936. "In the 1930s and 40s, Jackson's Market of Southwest Harbor sent a boat and operated a weekly market on the old steamboat wharf [on Little Cranberry Island] during the summer. In addition to meat and vegetables, a youthful stamp collector could find a small envelope of stamps inside each package of Brookfield butter." - “A History of Little Cranberry Island, Maine” by Hugh L. Ralph Stanley Inc.
Southwest Harbor Public Library
Description:
After earning an associate's degree from a college in northern Maine, Stanley returned to Southwest Harbor. Not sure what occupation he wanted to pursue, he decided to try to build a boat. So he earned the money he needed to buy wood and other construction materials and, during the winter of 1951-1952, he built a 28-foot lobster boat. The boat turned out well and a local person bought it. This led to orders for other boats. "I've been building (boats) ever since," he said. Stanley learned how to build boats not by apprenticing himself to another boatbuilder but mainly by keenly observing and using boats and by observing the activities of several professional boatbuilders who specialized in the Mt. Desert Island version of the Maine lobster boat. [show more]

Description:
This photograph was taken before the Manset shore was filled in. – According to Ralph Warren Stanley (1929-2021), the White boat hauled up on shore in front of the William Spurling Newman house at 102 Shore Road, Map 17 – Lot 100 – was probably built by Leslie “Les” M. Rice (1883-1966) on Great Cranberry Island for William “Uncle Jimmy” Doane Stanley (1855-1950). She was built as a double ender. Someone bought her and put a square stern on her. Work was slow at Hinckleys for awhile so Bill Dunham (Wilfred Manson Dunham (1918-2001) and Lewis Tapley (Lewis Merton Tapley (1916-1985) bought her and went fishing, though not for long. Work picked up at the Hinckley yard soon afterward. The vessel was then bought by Abner W. Lunt (1908-1975), then she was bought by Luther C. Faulkingham (1901-1993) of Prospect Harbor, where she was the last time Ralph saw her. The wharf building with the false front was the building that Francis “Frank” Thompson Chalmers Sr. (1893-1985), F. Dwight Perkins (1902-1981) and Merton S. Alley (1904-1985) had a car dealership in. Almon Frank Ramsdell Sr’s (1873-1946) garage was there later. Hinckley may have owned the building when this picture was taken. James “Jim” M. Willis (1919-2006) later ran “The Boathouse” there.
