|  Mount Desert Memories - Chronicles of the Mount Desert Party Northeast Harbor Library Description: In July 1888, a group of young people from Philadelphia set off for a holiday in Maine, destination Mount Desert Island. This privately published travel journal recounts with humor their adventures during those days of fun and discovery. This volume belongs to Sarah Carter and contains 36 sepia photographs. The entire journal (cover image) as well as the individual photographs have been scanned. From the Preface: "As the summer of 1888 drew near, some young friends put their heads together to arrange a pleasant trip, and realizing that it is not good for man (and consequently woman) to be alone, they decided to take pity on a few of the sons of Adam, of George Fox persuasion, inviting them to join in an excursion to Mt. Caption: "The red brick building at 1805 Chestnut Street has been a doctor’s office for ninety-one years. Malcom Macfarlan (1841-1921), a young Scottish immigrant, graduate of Yale and regimental medical officer with the 6th Maine Cavalry in the Alabama campaign (Civil War), came to Philadelphia with his bride, set up his office on Chestnut Street and proceeded to raise a family. Malcom’s two braw bairns, Donald, now 76, and Douglas, now 74, are shown on our cover this week examining the certificate of appreciation given each of them on May 10, 1961 by admiring fellow-practioners. A defect of many stories is that they almost leave out the scenery, but it is not so in this instance. The tale itself is deeply interesting, with its young man gone astray, its good-angel sister, and its fortune lost and plotted for, but the writer is evidently in love with all the scenic effects of sea and sky and land along the rugged Maine coast, and at Mount Desert. There would be almost too much word-painting if it were not for the admirable half-tone photographic views which serve as illustrations. Pertains to nautical voyages of Meltiah Richardson aboard the Carrie M. Richardson and perhaps others. It is an extremely valuable resource for interpretation of annotated Nautical Chart 1 and other charts in GCIHS 2015.315.2076. Journal entries corroborate plot markings on nautical chart 1. All pages with handwritten text scanned (48 scans) at 600 dpi July 27, 2016. Complete transcription made Feb. 2017. (Pages with newspaper clippings glued to them were not scanned - most clippings were poetry. Note: Meltiah's wife, Carrie (Mary Catherine Stanley Richardson), wrote and saved poetry.)
