"Mickey" Macfarlan's’ father) research labelled "William Bingham’s Maine Lands with biographical notes on Bingham, John Black, Col. Cobb, Baring Bros., Ashburton, Genl James Swagt [sp?]. Notebook also contains A= typewritten copy of Downeast Magazine 1966 Bingham Estate. B=Three seemingly unrelated newspaper clippings. C= An envelope with documents “The Engagement between the “Constitution” and the “Guerriere” Aug 19, 1812 (six pages) with transcription and a copy of "general orders (four pages) with note "turn this envelope up and over to get the ins. copy.” And D = A title page and lengthy manuscript: “Voyages of Discovery of the North Atlantic Coast by Douglas Macfarlan” with red Viking ship picture. |  Nautical Chart of Ireland with annotations Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Nautical chart of Ireland, believed to be a chart Samuel Hadlock, Jr. used for his voyages to Europe while touring with Eskimos and sled dogs in 1820s. Chart appears to be a section of a larger chart. A note on reverse (probably by Douglas Macfarlan (donor's father)) states: "This old navigation map was found in a sea chest in the Preble House, Cranberry Isl. Maine in 1947." Samuel Hadlock built what became known as the Preble House for the woman he married while on his European tour. Zoom in to see various annotations on the chart. Many nun-buoys are marked in brownish/yellow, and there are several pencil annotations made along the coastline. This chart was scanned at Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) in 2016. A framed print of the full size NEDCC scan hangs in the Macfarlan/Preble house. |  Towns Family Slides Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Photos. Slides, 223 total including 35 glass slides. Images donated by the Towns family of GCI: family, friends, homes, landscapes, and seascapes taken over decades. Five slides imprinted 1958; four possibly SEP1974; one 1991. Several handwritten lists of people and places were included with donation but can no longer be tied to individual slides. All slides have been digitally scanned in high resolution (see 2000\photos\dorothy towns). The Towns family are summer residents on GCI. The Towns property is also known historically as the Bayview Farm, the Red House, and the Crosby farm. (The slides are stored in a binder, grouped by brand names and numbers imprinted on individual slides: Kodachrome, Ektachrome, Ansco Color, Pavelle, and Mercury, in hopes slide technology might date these slides. One of the pictures is of Polly Bunker's shed, this shed used to belong to Sadie Bulger and was located between the Cox house and Eva Gallean's house. Sadie Bulger used to sell small things like pastries, soda, and snacks here. The narrow part of the building used to face towards the road. In order to get her to come out to buy something you had to knock on her door, this always made Mickey feel like he had to buy more than a nickel's worth! Phil thinks the shop closed sometime around 1950, and Mickey believes it closed sometimes around WWII. All the photos are artistic and would make a good slideshow. [show more] |
