The hull of the boat is decorated with a mermaid swimming in the ocean, which replicates the decorative scheme of the original boat. An engraved plaque on the backboard reads: Young America USA 36 Diana Wister With thanks and sincere appreciation for your generous contribution and support throughout the PACT95 Young America campaign. Young America was built by the PACT95 Syndicate, which hired the American artist Roy Lichtenstein to develop the distinctive exterior paint scheme. Clarence Beal and Harvey Bunker were aboard the vessel when it collided into the old steamboat wharf. At the time the barge was carrying a drilling rig, and this rig got caught causing the damage. The moleska got towed away back to Great Cranberry Island, where it was beached and underwent repair. On the way to GCI the moleska hit another boat, causing that boat to also have to be beached and repaired. As for the oil rig, it was towed out of the water and mechanics were able to get it up and running again. [show more]

These negatives were never catalogued when the original purchase came to the historical society. It was decided on 10/21/2014 to keep these negatives as a part of the W.H. Ballard collection but that each negative would not be given an object id. If there is further interest in any of the detailed negatives, further work will be needed to identify and catalogue each distinct image.
