Description: Cemetery. Collection of Spurling Cemetery Preservation Project 2016 materials. These are the records of work done on Spurling Cemetery No. 1 on Spurling Cove on the bluff near the Town dock in 2016. Inscriptions, digital photographs, measurements, deeds, spreadsheets, costs, blog, and photos of work and discoveries for each of the 26 known graves recorded by Anne Grulich. Documentation includes minutes, research, spreadsheet, photos, administrative documents, and field notes. Deed information was supplied by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust who has a conservation easement along part of the David and Tracy Weibel property where the burial ground is located. See various GCIHS Cranberry Chronicle newsletters for cemetery project progress. A memorial headstone listing all 26 known burials for whom only 8 headstones and 5 footstones remain. Description: Carl G. Nelson, born in Sweden in 1898, came to the United States when he was five-years-old. A part-time resident of Cranberry Isles for 21-years and a full-time resident for 19-years following his retirement from teaching in Boston, he died Aug. 6, 1988, at the age of 91. Carl Nelson was a professional teaching artist. After retiring at 71, he bought a piece of land and settled in a house on Great Cranberry. He called his little estate "Tosh Park", Nelson is noted for his beautiful pen and inks, oils, casein paintings and handsome linoleum cuts. His work is currently represented in museums, gallerys, universities and both government and private collections. He has a long list of exhibitions to his credit at the Whitney Museum Biennials, Chicago Art Institute, Institute of Contemporary Art and the American Federation of the Arts to name oniy a few. He has had many one-man shows in New York, Boston, Cambridge, Fitchburg, Mass., and Atlanta. His works have also been reproduced in a number of books — from Herbert Agar's "Land of the Free", in 1935 to "American Drawings; Drawings of the Masters" by Bartlett H. Hayes in 1975. The documentary film "Of Endless Wonder" was made in 1969 by Betsy Seigal and David Westphall of Brandeis. The artist was born in Sweden, studied at the Art Student's League in New York, was a Tiffany Foundation scholar, and graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. [show more]

Description: Three letters from Carl Nelson to his friend Martha. In the first letter he is writing and just catching up with her about a mutual friend they had passing. In the second letter he is writing Martha thanking her for a jar of relish that she had sent him. In the top right corner he drew a picture of the jar that she sent. The letter starts by saying "How I can tell you how good the relish really is." He continues to write about how much he enjoyed the relish and how good it was. In the third letter he begins by saying " Dear 'Dickerson'" which is the name of Martha's relish mentioned in the second letter. In this letter he adds more praises on Martha's relish and other friendly writing. [show more]
