Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this is a photograph of the vessels "Helen McColl", "Woiee" and "Hornet". He said that this was all in wartime. He went on to explain that draggers/offshore fishermen couldn't leave until full sunrise for the first few years of the war. Lobstermen and fishermen had the same rule but ignored it . The rule said that fishermen could go out a half hour after sunrise and return a half hour before sunset. After the first two years, enforcement was more lax. This picture has many subjects. There are two rowboats turned over on the float in the foreground. Behind them are the "Hornet" and a lobster boat with # 1 D 867 on its port side. Behind these are the "A.T.Haynes", "Woiee" and the "Helen McColl". Beal's Wharf is visible in the background. He continued with an explanation of vessel registration. Over 5 ton, you can document your vessel with the Federal Government and didn't have to pay state fees. This documentation carried with it certain advantages or privileges. Under 5 ton, you can license your boat with the state government and the # will stay with the boat forever. The caption on the picture reads, "Chester T. Marshall - Lengthening At S.W. Boat Corp 1946." According to James Warren's "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000", the "Chester T. Marshall" was built in East Boothbay, Maine, in 1923 and was affiliated with R.B.Stevens Company, Jonesport. The number on the vessel is 222811 and there are two men on board with their backs to the photographer. Ralph Stanley said she was a wet-well lobster smack. [show more]

A.T. Haynes and Osprey
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
According to Paul Stubing, the "A.T. Haynes" was a schooner, then became a factory boat. She eventually "died" on the flats just above Bobby Rich's place. He went on to describe other aspects of the photograph. The "Osprey" was a Stonington. ME sardine carrier which has a war-time number (204370) identifying her as an American vessel. He indicated that the war-time # was relative to the state. The numbers were sanded off after the war and replaced with regulation 4" x 6" letters. Both vessels are tied up in Southwest Harbor, Maine, near Beal's Wharf. On the left side of the picture, gas pumps adn a larger tank are visible. According to James Warren's "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000", Osprey was built at Dennysville in 1902 and had a length of 48.8, a depth of 6.5, gross ton 19 and net ton 11. She was affiliated with the Union Sardine Co. in Lubec and the Addison Packing Co. in Southwest Harbor. Ralph Stanley indicated that the "Osprey"was a sardine carrier built in Milbridge. He went on to say that the "A.T. Haynes" was a schooner built in Manset in 1869. At one time she was owned down to Frenchboro but at the time of this photo she was owned by someone in Lubec and was a freighter carrying supplies to canneries. [show more]

Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that the "Sylvina W. Beal" was out of Lubec. He went on to say that this vessel was a "shape 4". He suggested that she was hauled in wartime. Paul continued to give information about the rest of the picture. He said the outside white boat on the left was Sim Davis'. The dragger next to it was built by Southwest Boat Corp. The building in the middle is Manset Marine Supply (former coal house). The building on the right was the former Beal's wharf. According to James Warren's "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000", the "Sylvina W. Beal" was affiliated with the Seacoast Canning Co. of Eastport and the R.J. Peacock Canning Co. of Portland. She was built in 1911 in East Boothbay, Maine. Her length was 71.7 and depth 7 ft. Her gross ton was 48 and her net ton was 22. Ralph said the "Sylvina Bea"l is now in Eastport and was refurbished in one of the buildings owned by the Boat School. She is sailing parties on Pasmaquoddy Bay and is rigged as a schooner now. Ralph Stanley said he doesn't know what Paul meant by "shape 4". The "Hornet" is off SW Boat Corp and the large dark hulled vessel by her is the "Baby Rose". The lobster boat by the "Sylvina Beal" was owned by Clifford Stanley and was built by Les Rice on Cranberry. The boat at the Town Dock is the "Rosemary" out of Greening Island. The boat behind her ( you can just see the white shelter and hood) was Ralph's father's boat. She was built in 1931. [show more]

Eva Grace
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing said this is a photograph of the "Eva Grace". She was a sardine carrier without hydraulic pumping equipment. The view is looking towards Long Island. The vintage of the cars to the left of the photograph suggest that this could have been taken in the late 40's - early 50's. The "Eva Grace" is on the right side of the photo in dry dock with a man working on her port side. To the left of "Eva Grace" is a vessel with the id# 1 G 883. This boat resembles the traditional lobster boat style. It looks as if this picture was taken in a boat yard. According to James L. Warren's "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000", "Eva Grace" was built in East Machias, Maine, in 1930 and was 60 feet long. She drew 5.6 ft. Her gross ton was 34 and her net ton was 22. Cousin's Yard in East Blue Hill
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this is a photograph of Cousin's Yard in East Blue Hill Bay. There is a smelt tent in the background which had been pulled ashore. This type of tent was used in winter for ice fishing. Fish were put in box outside the tent. The custom died out in 1950's as pay for smelt wasn't sufficient. Stubing went on to explain about the saltwater and freshwater smelt tents. He said they used grain bags to cover a 1 -1/12 inch frame. There were runners underneath and a trap door. There was also a limber pole to hold line - the line dropped through. They had at least two pairs of woolen gloves. A blacksmith would use scrap metal to make a stove (square or round). A chimney would go up through the roof. They would make the chimney as high as possible. Ralph said the same boat which is hauled out is the one pictured in the Winter Harbor photos. Ralph says this may not be the Cousin's Yard. He'd have to go over there and look. [show more]

Beached Boats in a Southwest Harbor Cove
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this practice of beaching boats in a group is a "big club" which one had to be invited into or born into. This is the fourth in the series of six photos dealing with the subject of beached boats. In this picture there are six boats visible. There is a lobster car in the foreground. The hull id on the boat to the far right is #1K140. To the left of that boat is a man working on hull #1M570 which is the only boat with a canvas "cuddy". [show more]

Description:
This photograph is the third in this series of six pictures depicting the beached boats in the Southwest Harbor cove near what is now called the Western Way Condominiums. In this picture there are seven men visible holding or pushing hull # 1M468. All the men have hip boots on. In an interview with Ralph Stanley, he told A. Welles that he thought this boat belonged to Paul Faulkingham. The said the boat on the far right with hull # 1R401 belonged to Roger Rich. Moving from the left side of the photo to the right, Ralph believes that the first man is Paul Faulkingham and that the third man is Charlie Gilley. Ralph Stanley suggested that Sunny Stanley would be helpful in adding details. [show more]

Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that the Beached Boat group in this series (104-109) was a "big club" and you were only accepted into it after a period of time or born into it. This picture shows one of the beached boats with ten men standing on her port side. The Addison Packing Plant (sardine factory) is in the background. In an interview with Ralph Stanley, he told A. Welles that he thought this boat belonged to Roger Rich who was probably one of the men standing in the photo. Moving from the left side of the photograph to the right, Ralph thought the first person was Charlie Gilley, the third person, Harold Alley, and the fifth person, Paul Faulkingham. He thought the sixth might be Roger Rich. Sunny Stanley's head is just visible, second from the right. Ralph Stanley is going to try to bring Sunny Stanley in to add details. [show more]

Boats Beached in a Southwest Harbor Cove
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this begins a series of six pictures depicting boats up on the shore in a Southwest Harbor cove. This looks like the cove at the head of the harbor by the Western Way condominiums. There is part of a house visible in the upper right hand corner. Another house is seen in the woods above the stabilizing stern sail in the second boat from the left of the photograph. There are seven vessels beached for cleaning. Two people are visible working on the hull of the first boat from the left. There is a punt beached off the bow of the same vessel. There is another man visible walking towards the bow of the fourth vessel from the left. Ralph Stanley indicated in an interview with A. L. Welles that hull # 1L148 belonged to Carleton Gilley and was built by Paul Patton in Ellsworth. Charles Gilley owned and worked for Mrs. Lyman on Sutton's. He believes the punt is a Farley punt. Hull #1M551 (third boat from the left) is the first boat Ralph Stanley built (1951) and it was this boat that was owned by Charles Gilley. [show more]

To the left of the photograph is a man sitting on a punt. There is another man walking onto the float (across the connecting bridge). In the background are several sail boats in cradles. Ralph Stanley said this boat was built by Farnham Butler at his yard. It could be the owner on the float. [show more]

Description:
Paul Stubing said that this photograph was of a Bernard wharf around 1946. The date on the back is July 29, 1946. There are lobster traps piled on the wharf. There is a boat on the left side of the picture which is partially visible. In the bottom right is a lobster car grounded out. The boat at the dock belongs to Clarence Harding and he is on the boat. This is the boat that rescued Ralph Stanley's dad when he was adrift by Mt. Desert Rock. The temperature had dropped to below zero that night and blew a gale and the only protection was a canvas hood, spray hood, on the boat. (There is a full account of this event in Ralph Stanley's Tales of a Maine Boatbuilder.) Ralph said the boat which is grounded out is owned by Merle Black. [show more]

Description:
The notation on the back of this photograph is "Schooner George Klink at Clark Point, Southwest Harbor, Maine for overhauling." Off the starboard side of the schooner is a rig for unloading coal to travel down a chute to the old J.N Mills' coal wharf building which had plumbed walls. In an interview with Ralph Stanley he said that this schooner was built in Mystic, CT. in 1902. Bing Sargeant (and others ??) bought her. She was laid up in Rockland, Boothbay area about 1940-41 and took her south with lumber and hit a storm off Cape Hattaras and broke up. Parts of the vessel were scattered everywhere. The Air Craft carrier WASP rescued the crew. The Captain was Lewis McFarland from Trenton, ME. While she was being repaired, many artists came to paint her. The boat second from the right was probably from Cranberry Islands. The boat to the right of that boat is Pansy R. owned by Cliff Robbins (Harbor Master) built on Cranberry by Les Rice. She's a double-ender with a mast rig to tend moorings. The walkway to the rig behind the Klink is to offload coal. [show more]

Repair Work on a Vessel at Southwest Boat Corporation
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
This is 1946 or later because the wartime number is covered on the port side of the vessel which is tied up along side the town dock in Southwest Harbor closest to Beal's Wharf . There are several workmen visible onboard doing various jobs. Behind this vessel are two others tied up to the floats. One has a canvas spray hood and is numbered 1-B-731 and the other is a more traditional looking boat in the lobstering style but could be outfitted as a personal launch since it is difficult to see the usual rigging for lobstering. Its number is 1-D-492, the "Rosemary" from Greenings Island. Ralph Stanley said that 1-B-731 was owned by Ralph's great uncle who also owned the house Ralph lives in on Clark Point Road. The dragger is the "Baby Rose" and was built at Thomaston. The Coast Guard took her during the War so they had the "Mary Rose" built at Southwest Harbor Boat to replace her. [show more]

Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this was a wartime photo. The war numbers are visible on the vessel hulls. On the right of the picture is the Southwest Boat Corporation's pile driver. The "Rosemarie" with a War # of 4A170 is tied next to the peapod. The "Rosemarie" came from Provincetown and Ralph Stanley thinks that Bill Sklaroff, owner of Stanley Fisheries, might have been part owner. SW Boat did quite a lot of work on the "Rosemarie". Ralph said the double-ender (along side the "Rosemarie") did not belong to Jarvis's father. It belonged to Cliff Robbins. Over the top of the "Sea Fox", you can see the dragger "U & I". The boat farthest away with the wartime numbers in white is the "Dorothy and Edith" built by Farnham Butler, Mt. Desert Yacht Yard, in the 1940's. Derby Stanley and his family had this boat built. He had been a rum runner too. Derby's son Warren and Ralph Ramsdell were overcome by coal gas and died on that boat in Frenchboro. Ralph Stanley said the "Sea Fox" was built at Southwest Boat for a man in Provincetown who had come from Portugal. He was known to be a liquor smuggler. There has been a book written about him. She hailed from Provincetown. The owner eventually returned to Portugal. In back of the pile driver, is a Nova Scotian dragger. He lost money on the "Mary Rose" too. Ralph Stanley said Sargeant lost money on most of the boats he built. His sister bailed him out a few times. Finally the First National Bank took over the running of SWBoat. They tried to oversee the financial part of it. Eventually, John Briggs's father bought it. Construction of "largest dragger by tonnage"
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
This photo is one of a series depicting the steps of constructing the largest dragger by tonnage. In this picture, there is a crane to the left and the bow of the "Silas McLoon" on the right. Ralph Stanley said the Silas McLoon was a wet well lobster smack. Her hold was full of holes so they kept the lobsters in water. Silas was bought by Beal and Bunker in the 1950's. They plugged up all the holes and used her to carry hake which they bought at Cranberry Island and took the hake to Vinalhaven to the canning factory. Buster Rice of Cranberry Island was Captain at that time. This was about 1953. [show more]

There is an oil painting of his schooner in the Boston Marine Society. Boat-like barge to the port side of the ferry Paul Stubing referred to as a concession in which fisherman kept gear and bait. The reverse side of the photo had this list of names: 1C399 Elisha Bunker boat 1C728 Hessenbrook - Sutton's Island Capt. Frank Faulkingham Islesford Ferry - boat named "Restless" Lone Wolf in Harbor - Harvard Beal 492 Rosemary - Thorpe Estate, Greening Island (on the right behind those people) Faraway - Estes Family, Greening Island [show more]

Sardine carriers
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
This photo is of Sardine Carriers from a stern view so the names are identifiable. Working from right to left the names are Helen McColl, Surfman, A.T. Haynes. Paul Stubing said the A.T. Haynes was a former schooner made into a supply boat carrying barrels, oil and coal. Ralph Stanley said the A.T. Haynes was used as a freighter carrying cans and supplies to the canneries. The Surfman was owned by the Addison Packing Co. of Southwest Harbor. The A.T.Haynes was built in Manset about 1869. Eventually she was hauled up between the coal wharf and town dock. She stayed there quite awhile until a group of fisherman bought her. They built a house, a rough shed, to store their bait in. Then she was sold to fishermen in Bass Harbor and used for the same purpose. She eventually was hauled out in a little cove by Crockett Point and probably parts of her are still there. [show more]

Description:
This is a photo of sardine carriers stored and overhauled at Southwest Boat. In the foreground are lobster boats tied up and skiffs built in the 40's and 50's in McKinley-Bernard by three different people. Paul Stubing added that one man in Bernard built skiffs for hotels at Moosehead Lake and other places and charged $12.50 apiece. Ralph Stanley thought 1M12 was either built by Roger Rich or Bob Rich. He wasn't sure about the other boat - the nearer one. " Looks like a Raymond Bunker boat but I'm not sure." [show more]

Paul Stubing indicated that the William Underwood was "practically a new sardine carrier". Lewis R. French at this time was used as a freighter, the other two are sardine carriers. Ralph Stanley said the Lewis R. French is now used as a schooner out of Rockland or Camden area and that she is a very old boat. The "Bonaventure" and "Hornet" tied up in front of Southwest Boat Corp with Manset Maine Supply Company building to the right of the port bow. It appears to be high tide. Paul Stubing indicated that Hinckley bought out Southwest Boat Corp in the summer of 1937. Ralph Stanley indicated that 'Bonaventure" was built at SW Boat Corp. around 1941 and owned by the Novello family of Gloucester, Massachusetts. So was the 'Hornet", owned by Harvard Beal. The building which reads Manset Marine Supply Co. was the old Mills Coal Wharf and was owned at this time by SW Boat. The house and barn on the left is gone now. That was owned by Mary C. Parker, one of the Clark descendants. [show more]

Old Coast Guard Station in Southwest Harbor
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
This is a photo of the "Old Coast Guard" station in Southwest Harbor which Stubing said was replaced in the mid-forties because the "Baby Rose" is in the background and she was brought back and refitted as a dragger. (Grounded out at town dock. ) The vessel "Sylvina Beal" is in the foreground with its war time # still on board. This dragger was built by a Southwest Habor boatyard. Ralph Stanley said... The boat at the town dock ( only half visible) on the far left is the "Rosemary" of Greenings Island which was owned by the Thorpe estate. Old Raymond Reed worked for them. The boat at Beal's dock, Sylvina W. Beal, is now in Eastport rigged as a schooner taking people on sailing trips. The Coast Guard boat at the far right is a 38 ft. pickett boat. Many of these were built at Hinckley's during World War II. The boat at Beal's float (on the outside) belonged to Clifford Stanley. The other two boats, Ralph couldn't identify. [show more]

Rhode Island Fishing Dragger
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Rhode Island sardine carrier finished off at Southwest Boat Corporation. Its name is a question. Looking at the photo, the words Rhode Island appear on the stern of the vessel on the right. In the interview with Paul Stubing, he commented that Southwest Boat Corporation built a lot of draggers and referred to this boat as a dragger, as well as " Bonaventure". The vessel Graylin(g?) is also in the photo and the picture seems to have been taken from Beal's Wharf. Ralph Stanley indicated that the boat on left side of picture tied up to the float was built by Bob Rich. The other boat at this dock is a Cranberry Island boat. The "U & I" is in the background by the mast of that outside sardine boat. The little lobster boat in that same neighborhood was owned by Perry Lawson and went ashore and "stove up" shortly after that. The boat at the town dock (the middle float) was built by Rich Brothers (Frank and Ulysses). Tud Bunker was the Captain. [show more]
