Schooner "George Klink"
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
The notation on the back of this photograph is "Schooner George Klink at Clark Point, Southwest Harbor, Maine for overhauling." Off the starboard side of the schooner is a rig for unloading coal to travel down a chute to the old J.N Mills' coal wharf building which had plumbed walls. In an interview with Ralph Stanley he said that this schooner was built in Mystic, CT. in 1902. Bing Sargeant (and others ??) bought her. She was laid up in Rockland, Boothbay area about 1940-41 and took her south with lumber and hit a storm off Cape Hattaras and broke up. Parts of the vessel were scattered everywhere. The Air Craft carrier WASP rescued the crew. The Captain was Lewis McFarland from Trenton, ME. While she was being repaired, many artists came to paint her. The boat second from the right was probably from Cranberry Islands. The boat to the right of that boat is Pansy R. owned by Cliff Robbins (Harbor Master) built on Cranberry by Les Rice. She's a double-ender with a mast rig to tend moorings. The walkway to the rig behind the Klink is to offload coal. [show more]

Mary Rose
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
This is a photo of the "Mary Rose". The Rose family had both "Judith Lee Rose" and "Mary Rose" built. There is ice around the hull and out into the harbor. There is an American Amoco gas sign at the top center of the picture. "Mary Rose" was built at Southwest Boat in 1943. Sargeant took the "Bonaventure" to build at $60,000 and it cost him $90,000. He lost money on the "Mary Rose" too. Ralph Stanley said Sargeant lost money on most of the boats he built. His sister bailed him out a few times. Finally the First National Bank took over the running of SWBoat. They tried to oversee the financial part of it. Eventually, John Briggs's father bought it. When he died, John Briggs (a New York publisher) ran it for a while. [show more]

Jarvis Newman's father's peapod and dragger built by Sim Davis
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
  • Image, Photograph, Black-and-White Photograph
  • Ballard, W.H.
  • 1944
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this was a wartime photo. The war numbers are visible on the vessel hulls. On the right of the picture is the Southwest Boat Corporation's pile driver. The "Rosemarie" with a War # of 4A170 is tied next to the peapod. The "Rosemarie" came from Provincetown and Ralph Stanley thinks that Bill Sklaroff, owner of Stanley Fisheries, might have been part owner. SW Boat did quite a lot of work on the "Rosemarie". Ralph said the double-ender (along side the "Rosemarie") did not belong to Jarvis's father. It belonged to Cliff Robbins. Over the top of the "Sea Fox", you can see the dragger "U & I". The boat farthest away with the wartime numbers in white is the "Dorothy and Edith" built by Farnham Butler, Mt. Desert Yacht Yard, in the 1940's. Derby Stanley and his family had this boat built. He had been a rum runner too. Derby's son Warren and Ralph Ramsdell were overcome by coal gas and died on that boat in Frenchboro. Ralph Stanley said the "Sea Fox" was built at Southwest Boat for a man in Provincetown who had come from Portugal. He was known to be a liquor smuggler. There has been a book written about him. She hailed from Provincetown. The owner eventually returned to Portugal. In back of the pile driver, is a Nova Scotian dragger. Ralph thinks Bill Howell may have owned her before he owned the "Rhode Island". [show more]

Launching "Novelty"
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing said this is a photograph of the "Novelty" being launched for the Stonington Packing Plant. He said she was built at Hinckley's where Raymond Bunker was the master builder. According to James Warren's book, "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000", she was built in Southwest Harbor in 1944. Her length was 64.8 ft., depth 6.3 ft., gross ton 39 and her net ton 20. She was affiliated with Burnham & Morrill Seafood and R.K. Barter Canneries of Stonington. She has a wartime number on her hull which reads 245802. There are people lining the wharves on either side of the "Novelty" as she slides into the water. [show more]

Sardine carriers
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
This photo is of Sardine Carriers from a stern view so the names are identifiable. Working from right to left the names are Helen McColl, Surfman, A.T. Haynes. Paul Stubing said the A.T. Haynes was a former schooner made into a supply boat carrying barrels, oil and coal. Ralph Stanley said the A.T. Haynes was used as a freighter carrying cans and supplies to the canneries. The Surfman was owned by the Addison Packing Co. of Southwest Harbor. The A.T.Haynes was built in Manset about 1869. Eventually she was hauled up between the coal wharf and town dock. She stayed there quite awhile until a group of fisherman bought her. They built a house, a rough shed, to store their bait in. Then she was sold to fishermen in Bass Harbor and used for the same purpose. She eventually was hauled out in a little cove by Crockett Point and probably parts of her are still there. [show more]

The names on these latter vessels are the "Elva Beal" hailing from Southwest Harbor and the Elin B. with her war numbers - 243314- visible on her port bow. The conditions appear foggy. Ralph Stanley indicated that the Elva L. Beal was built for Harvard Beal at Southwest Boat in 1945. Ralph believes the Elin B. was built in Stonington. Billings Yard built a number of vessels for the Army during WWII. They were called T Boats and were probably used for patrol. The Elin B. was built off the same mold as the T Boats. [show more]

Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this is the vessel "Chester T. Marshall" being lengthened. He said she was cut in the center of the "flat" - usually amidships. He commented that this was during wartime. He continued with an explanation of vessel registration. Over 5 ton, you can document your vessel with the Federal Government and didn't have to pay state fees. This documentation carried with it certain advantages or privileges. Under 5 ton, you can license your boat with the state government and the # will stay with the boat forever. The caption on the picture reads, "Chester T. Marshall - Lengthening At S.W. Boat Corp 1946." According to James Warren's "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000", the "Chester T. Marshall" was built in East Boothbay, Maine, in 1923 and was affiliated with R.B.Stevens Company, Jonesport. The number on the vessel is 222811 and there are two men on board with their backs to the photographer. Ralph Stanley said she was a wet-well lobster smack. [show more]

Each crate has rope handles. Ralph Stanley said the boat second from the left with a spray hood and shelter and the traps on the following deck belonged to Merton Alley at that time. It was built by Chester Clement for Francis Fernald on Islesford. Ralph couldn't identify any other of the boats. Possibly Arlene Bartlett could identify some of the other boats in the pictures. She might know others who could be helpful. [show more]

Description:
Paul Stubing said that this photograph was of a Bernard wharf around 1946. The date on the back is July 29, 1946. There are lobster traps piled on the wharf. There is a working lobster boat next to the wharf on the right side of the picture. There is a square punt tied to the ladder on the same side of the wharf. There is a boat on the left side of the picture which is partially visible. In the bottom right is a lobster car grounded out. The boat at the dock belongs to Clarence Harding and he is on the boat. This is the boat that rescued Ralph Stanley's dad when he was adrift by Mt. Desert Rock. The temperature had dropped to below zero that night and blew a gale and the only protection was a canvas hood, spray hood, on the boat. (There is a full account of this event in Ralph Stanley's Tales of a Maine Boatbuilder.) Ralph said the boat which is grounded out is owned by Merle Black. [show more]

Repair Work on a Vessel at Southwest Boat Corporation
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
This is 1946 or later because the wartime number is covered on the port side of the vessel which is tied up along side the town dock in Southwest Harbor closest to Beal's Wharf . There are several workmen visible onboard doing various jobs. Behind this vessel are two others tied up to the floats. One has a canvas spray hood and is numbered 1-B-731 and the other is a more traditional looking boat in the lobstering style but could be outfitted as a personal launch since it is difficult to see the usual rigging for lobstering. Its number is 1-D-492, the "Rosemary" from Greenings Island. Ralph Stanley said that 1-B-731 was owned by Ralph's great uncle who also owned the house Ralph lives in on Clark Point Road. The dragger is the "Baby Rose" and was built at Thomaston. The Coast Guard took her during the War so they had the "Mary Rose" built at Southwest Harbor Boat to replace her. [show more]

Construction of "largest dragger by tonnage"
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
This photo is one of a series depicting the steps of constructing the largest dragger by tonnage. In this picture, there is a crane to the left and the bow of the "Silas McLoon" on the right. Ralph Stanley said the Silas McLoon was a wet well lobster smack. Her hold was full of holes so they kept the lobsters in water. Silas was bought by Beal and Bunker in the 1950's. They plugged up all the holes and used her to carry hake which they bought at Cranberry Island and took the hake to Vinalhaven to the canning factory. Buster Rice of Cranberry Island was Captain at that time. This was about 1953. [show more]

Description:
This photograph is the third in this series of six pictures depicting the beached boats in the Southwest Harbor cove near what is now called the Western Way Condominiums. In this picture there are seven men visible holding or pushing hull # 1M468. All the men have hip boots on. In an interview with Ralph Stanley, he told A. Welles that he thought this boat belonged to Paul Faulkingham. The said the boat on the far right with hull # 1R401 belonged to Roger Rich. Moving from the left side of the photo to the right, Ralph believes that the first man is Paul Faulkingham and that the third man is Charlie Gilley. Ralph Stanley suggested that Sunny Stanley would be helpful in adding details. [show more]

Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that the Beached Boat group in this series (104-109) was a "big club" and you were only accepted into it after a period of time or born into it. This picture shows one of the beached boats with ten men standing on her port side. The Addison Packing Plant (sardine factory) is in the background. In an interview with Ralph Stanley, he told A. Welles that he thought this boat belonged to Roger Rich who was probably one of the men standing in the photo. Moving from the left side of the photograph to the right, Ralph thought the first person was Charlie Gilley, the third person, Harold Alley, and the fifth person, Paul Faulkingham. He thought the sixth might be Roger Rich. Sunny Stanley's head is just visible, second from the right. Ralph Stanley is going to try to bring Sunny Stanley in to add details. [show more]

Boats Beached in a Southwest Harbor Cove
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this begins a series of six pictures depicting boats up on the shore in a Southwest Harbor cove. This looks like the cove at the head of the harbor by the Western Way condominiums. There is part of a house visible in the upper right hand corner. Another house is seen in the woods above the stabilizing stern sail in the second boat from the left of the photograph. There are seven vessels beached for cleaning. Two people are visible working on the hull of the first boat from the left. There is a punt beached off the bow of the same vessel. There is another man visible walking towards the bow of the fourth vessel from the left. Ralph Stanley indicated in an interview with A. L. Welles that hull # 1L148 belonged to Carleton Gilley and was built by Paul Patton in Ellsworth. Charles Gilley owned and worked for Mrs. Lyman on Sutton's. He believes the punt is a Farley punt. Hull #1M551 (third boat from the left) is the first boat Ralph Stanley built (1951) and it was this boat that was owned by Charles Gilley. [show more]

"Sylvina Beal" during Wartime
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this picture of the vessel "Sylvina W. Beal" was taken during wartime. The hull ID # is 208896. The lettering "R. J. PEACOCK CANNING CO." appears on her port bow beneath her name. Two Gulf gas pumps are visible off her starboard side. "Baby Rose" is tied up alongside the "lower town dock". Two lobster boats are tied up to the floats off Sylvina's bow. According to John D. Gilman's , "Masts and Masters - a brief history of Sardine Carriers and Boatmen", the "Sylvina Beal" was built in 1911 at East Boothbay for Charles Henry Beal of Jonesport, Maine, to be used as a banks fishing schooner and later used as a lobster freighter from Nova Scotia to Boston. She was 71 feet 7 inches in length. In 1917, she was bought by the Seacoast Co. and converted to a sardine carrier and repowered with a 100-horsepower Chrysler gasoline motor. In 1926, she was repowered with a straight eight Chrysler marine engine and a wheel house was added to her in East Boothbay under Peacock and Pike ownership. In 1929, she was bought by R.J. Peacock Canning Co. for $5,000. When the R.J.Peacock Canning Co. closed, she was sent to Southwest Harbor to "die". Eventually, the Beal was sold to Captain John Worth of Belfast in 1980 to be reconverted to her "original form" and used as a windjammer in the coastal schooner trade. After an idle season in 1989, she was sold to Captain Geoffrey Jones who sails her out of Greenport, Long Island, N. Y. [show more]
