Mills' coal wharf building. In the foreground is a rowboat and tied up to the float in front of the Klink's bow is a motor yacht. There is a punt on the float. On the right of the photo is a three-masted schooner. Ralph Stanley said the schooner to the right was built in Bath and sunk during WWII. Her name was the Rebecca R. Douglas. (also shown in 007.19. 78) [show more]
Description: The notation on the back of this photograph is "Schooner George Klink at Clark Point, Southwest Harbor, Maine for overhauling." Off the starboard side of the schooner is a rig for unloading coal to travel down a chute to the old J.N Mills' coal wharf building which had plumbed walls. In an interview with Ralph Stanley he said that this schooner was built in Mystic, CT. in 1902. Bing Sargeant (and others ??) bought her. She was laid up in Rockland, Boothbay area about 1940-41 and took her south with lumber and hit a storm off Cape Hattaras and broke up. Parts of the vessel were scattered everywhere. The Air Craft carrier WASP rescued the crew. The Captain was Lewis McFarland from Trenton, ME. While she was being repaired, many artists came to paint her. The boat second from the right was probably from Cranberry Islands. The boat to the right of that boat is Pansy R. owned by Cliff Robbins (Harbor Master) built on Cranberry by Les Rice. She's a double-ender with a mast rig to tend moorings. The walkway to the rig behind the Klink is to offload coal. [show more]

There is lumber stacked on the wharf and a boat tied to the wharf in the left foreground numbered I-J-4. Ralph Stanley believes that the boat in the foreground was built by Chester Clement and Harvard Beal owned it. He used it for sightseeing. Ralph thinks the name of this boat was the Three Brothers. [show more]
Description: This photograph is of a Stonington schooner used in the granite business. Paul Stubing indicated that this photograph was taken from the Manset shore near the "Dutch house" by the Manset Town dock. There is a person rowing in a punt to the right of the photo. Ralph Stanley said that her masts are far apart so that you could load big granite blocks.
Description: Paul Stubing indicated that this photo was taken from Little Cranberry Island or Islesford looking towards Mount Desert Island - Seal Harbor area. There is a schooner on the right side of the photo.
Description: This is a photograph of the schooner "Nova Scotian" in Southwest Harbor. It is a foggy day and there are reflections of the sails in the water.
Description: This picture shows the launching of the "CR & M" on a foggy day. The vessel is draped in flags and there are people standing on granite pilings off her starboard side. Ralph Stanley said the launching took place in Bass Harbor.
Description: The "CR & M" is shown in this photograph. She is tied up next to a wharf with her port side visible. There is a man climbing the rigging who is "rattling her down". Ralph Stanley said the side panels are probably steel to protect her from the wear and tear of the wing boards.
Description: This is a photograph showing the rigging of the CR & M. Paul Stubing indicated that the men are working in the hole "rattling her down". There are five men visible in the picture doing various jobs. There are planks, tools, pipes, hoses and a sawbuck scattered on the deck. Ralph Stanley indicated that they brought C R & M to Southwest Boat to finish her off.
Description: This is an inside view of a boat hull. Paul Stubing indicated that this was the shaft log and engine bed of CR & M. There is a sledge hammer resting upright in the top center of the picture.
Description: This is a photograph of a worker inside a boat shop doing work . It looks like he has a hammer in his right hand and and a plug in his left. Paul Stubing indicated that this man is working with frames which have been placed in a salt pond over two years and then left to dry (an old English custom) before being used. The man is wearing a checked cap with a visor and has a pencil resting on his left ear. There is second hammer stuck in one pocket and a folding wooden ruler in another. On the back of the photo the caption reads "Fastening the stern timbers of a large fishing dragger, at Bass Harbor, Maine" in black ink and the name John Varnam is written in blue ink. Ralph Stanley said this photo was taken at Sim Davis's boatyard. [show more]
Description: This is 1946 or later because the wartime number is covered on the port side of the vessel which is tied up along side the town dock in Southwest Harbor closest to Beal's Wharf . There are several workmen visible onboard doing various jobs. Behind this vessel are two others tied up to the floats. One has a canvas spray hood and is numbered 1-B-731 and the other is a more traditional looking boat in the lobstering style but could be outfitted as a personal launch since it is difficult to see the usual rigging for lobstering. Its number is 1-D-492, the "Rosemary" from Greenings Island. Ralph Stanley said that 1-B-731 was owned by Ralph's great uncle who also owned the house Ralph lives in on Clark Point Road. The dragger is the "Baby Rose" and was built at Thomaston. The Coast Guard took her during the War so they had the "Mary Rose" built at Southwest Harbor Boat to replace her. [show more]
Description: Paul Stubing indicated that the Sunbeam #2 or #3 is in the foreground of this picture. In the background two other vessels are rafted together at a series of three floats. The names on these latter vessels are the "Elva Beal" hailing from Southwest Harbor and the Elin B. with her war numbers - 243314- visible on her port bow. The conditions appear foggy. Ralph Stanley indicated that the Elva L. Beal was built for Harvard Beal at Southwest Boat in 1945. Ralph believes the Elin B. was built in Stonington. Billings Yard built a number of vessels for the Army during WWII. They were called T Boats and were probably used for patrol. The Elin B. was built off the same mold as the T Boats. [show more]
Description: This is a photo of the "Connecticut" listed as hailing from Bar Harbor on the stern. Ralph Stanley indicated that she was built at Southwest Boat Corp. in 1946 and foundered off Gay Head Lighthouse on Sept. 29, 1948. This picture shows several workmen on board doing various jobs. To the vessel's right on the float are piles of lumber and there is a makeshift bridge to use to get on board. There is also an open ladder next to the starboard side of the boat. [show more]
Description: Paul Stubing indicated that this is a photo of the Rhode Island after a year or so of service. She had to be hauled out to repaint the old Gloucester copper paint (red and green or blue...later blue was liked by yachtsmen... But fishermen didn't like blue because they considered it bad luck. The English painted coffins of men who died at sea blue. Italians used blue too. She is aground next to the Southwest Harbor town dock closest to Beal's Wharf. In the foreground are two punts and a rowing skiff with a motor on the stern all upright on a float by Beal's Wharf. There are several vintage vehicles parked in the dock's parking lot. [show more]

Description: This is a photo of two workers scrubbing the bottom of the "Rhode Island" as she is grounded out by the Southwest Harbor town dock located next to Beal's Wharf. Paul Stubing indicated that this process of cleaning and painting while grounded out saved hauling the vessel out of the water. There is a truck visible on the dock. At the bottom of this picture is written in pencil "Capt. Bill Howell".
Description: This is a photograph of the "Sandra & Jean" built by Southwest Boat Corp in 1945. The vessel is tied up on the side of the Southwest Harbor town dock closest to Beal's Wharf. In the background is the vessel "Duke's" wheelhouse. "Duke" was a freighter from Lubec. She was one of the boats that carried cans and supplies to the factories and had a flat bottom.
Description: Paul Stubing indicated that this was a wartime photo. The war numbers are visible on the vessel hulls. On the right of the picture is the Southwest Boat Corporation's pile driver. The "Rosemarie" with a War # of 4A170 is tied next to the peapod. The "Rosemarie" came from Provincetown and Ralph Stanley thinks that Bill Sklaroff, owner of Stanley Fisheries, might have been part owner. SW Boat did quite a lot of work on the "Rosemarie". Ralph said the double-ender (along side the "Rosemarie") did not belong to Jarvis's father. It belonged to Cliff Robbins. Over the top of the "Sea Fox", you can see the dragger "U & I". The boat farthest away with the wartime numbers in white is the "Dorothy and Edith" built by Farnham Butler, Mt. Desert Yacht Yard, in the 1940's. Derby Stanley and his family had this boat built. He had been a rum runner too. Derby's son Warren and Ralph Ramsdell were overcome by coal gas and died on that boat in Frenchboro. Ralph Stanley said the "Sea Fox" was built at Southwest Boat for a man in Provincetown who had come from Portugal. He was known to be a liquor smuggler. There has been a book written about him. She hailed from Provincetown. The owner eventually returned to Portugal. In back of the pile driver, is a Nova Scotian dragger. Ralph thinks Bill Howell may have owned her before he owned the "Rhode Island". [show more]
Description: This is a photograph of the "Rhode Island" tied up at the Southwest Harbor town dock near what is now Beal's Wharf. She is aground with her hull exposed. Ralph Stanley said she was built in Waldeboro. At the time of this picture she was owned by Bill Howell of Southwest Harbor.
Description: This is a photograph of the dragger "Hornet" motoring by Greenings Island. There is an interesting object in the air which has been identified as a blimp. Ralph Stanley said that the "Hornet" was originally painted white. Harvard Beal had her built at SW Boat around 1944.
Description: This photo is of several sardine carriers tied up off Southwest Boat Corporation. In the left foreground is a lobster boat with a canvas spray hood built on Cranberry Islands and hull # 1B783.
Description: This is a photograph of a "Stay Sail" schooner yacht. Paul Stubing indicated that the schooner has marconi rig on all spars which is high tech. The wake in the foreground is from the boat Ballard was on.
Description: This photo is of five A-class boats. Number 32 is closest to the photographer. One of these boats was built for the Morris family. Don Q is the name on the stern. Pete Welles indicated that #32 is a Rice boat built in Maine. Numbers 26 and higher were Rice boats.
Description: This is a photo of the "Lilly P III". Paul Stubing said that she was built in Bass Harbor and used for day fishing. She is tied up to a dock and there are five adults sitting on the bow deck of the upper level (four male and one female). There are three fenders hanging off the starboard side. Ralph Stanley said this boat was built by Sim Davis who is the second person from the right in this picture.
Description: The Rose family from Gloucester had Southwest Boat Corporation build a dragger called the "Judith Lee Rose". Later on they had the "Mary Rose" and "Baby Rose" also built by Southwest Boat. In this photo there are four male adults and one female adult. There is also one of the Rose girls holding what could be a champagne bottle wrapped in ribbons.
Description: This picture is a marked as a commission job. The left side of the photo is rocky cliffs and there is a schooner to the right. There is a lone coniferous tree on top of the cliffs. Paul Stubing indicated that this photo was of the Thunder Hole area in Bar Harbor.
Description: This is a photo of the "Mary Rose". The Rose family had both "Judith Lee Rose" and "Mary Rose" built. There is ice around the hull and out into the harbor. There is an American Amoco gas sign at the top center of the picture. "Mary Rose" was built at Southwest Boat in 1943. Sargeant took the "Bonaventure" to build at $60,000 and it cost him $90,000. He lost money on the "Mary Rose" too. Ralph Stanley said Sargeant lost money on most of the boats he built. His sister bailed him out a few times. Finally the First National Bank took over the running of SWBoat. They tried to oversee the financial part of it. Eventually, John Briggs's father bought it. When he died, John Briggs (a New York publisher) ran it for a while. [show more]
Description: This is another view of the draggers at the Stanley Fish Wharf on the Manset Shore. This picture appears to be looking back at the wharf from the area around the present Moorings Hotel. Notice the background structures. It looks like the steeple on the High Road Church is visible.
Description: This photo shows the Gloucester draggers in Southwest Harbor - perhaps to avoid weather. The boats seem to be tied up to the Stanley Fish Wharf on the Manset side of the harbor looking towards Greenings Island. Ralph Stanley said the draggers used to come in to the harbor during the winter. They were fishing out by Mt. Desert Rock . They were red fishing. The motorboat in the foreground, the double-ender, was owned by J.L. Stanley Fisheries. She was built on Cranberry Islands. The wharf in the foreground was originally built by Horace Durgin around 1850. Some of this structure is now part of the Madeira (Tyson) dock. Harold Tyson had the house built (not seen in this picture). This house was designed by Gilchrist who had also designed the Ellsworth City Hall in 1933. [show more]
Description: This is a photo of the Sardine Carrier "Gary Allen" (a steam yacht at the turn of the century). "El Placita" also had been a steam yacht. Diesel took over at the time of WWII. Ralph Stanley said "El Placita" was owned by the Machiasport Cannery. She was owned by Jones Wass, Henry Wass's father, at the time of this photo. Ralph thinks this is in the late 40's. The motor boat (lobsterboat) with the white spray hood and bow partially hidden by pilings was owned by "Billy Dump" Spurling, Geneva Spurling's father. That boat was built by Chester Clement in the 1930's. The boat across the head of the dock, that you can't see, is the "Vinalhaven" which was built at Southwest Boat during WWII to serve as a ferry between Rockland and Vinalhaven. The sardine carrier at the dock, the "Lawrence Wayne", was built by Sim (Granville) Davis. [show more]
Description: This photo depicts "Judith Lee Rose" afloat in the harbor. Floats are to the left of the photo. The Judith Lee Rose is "dressed" in flags.
Description: This photo continues the series depicting the launching of the "Judith Lee Rose". She is in the water and there are people watching on the right of the picture.
Description: This photo continues the series depicting the launching of the fishing dragger called the Judith Lee Rose. The man in the middle of the photograph may be Mr. Rose from Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Description: This is a photo of Southwest Boatyard. Paul Stubing indicated that it is of an office and family. There are several people gathered on the front steps for some occasion. There is a woman on the left in the front row holding a bouquet of flowers. There are two children in the center foreground. There is a clergyman fourth from the right in the front row. Possibly this is a christening??
Description: This photo is in the construction series of the largest dragger by tonnage built at Southwest Boat Corp. This photo is taken from the Southwest Harbor shore and the bow end of the vessel is in the foreground. The sardine factory is in the background. Paul Stubing said "dubbed it fair" with adz and "shaped them fair" and hung a shear plank (horizontal plank).
Description: This photo depicts the construction of the largest dragger by tonnage from the bow. Photo is taken from the shore. The vertical planks of the bow's "skeleton structure" are in view.
Description: This photo is the seventh in the series of the largest dragger being constructed by tonnage built at Southwest Boat Corp. In this picture the stern is becoming more visible in the "skeleton" workings. Curved planks appear to be in place on the stern.
Description: This is an inside view of the construction process of the largest dragger by tonnage built by Southwest Boat. In this photo three workers are inside the "skeleton" of the dragger.
Description: This photo is the sixth in the series of the construction of the largest dragger by tonnage built at Southwest Boat Yard. Two workers are in the foreground working with the horizontal planks. This picture differs from the preceding one by its orientation. The workers are center and to the right rather than on the left.
Description: This photo is the fifth in the series depicting the construction of the largest dragger by tonnage at Southwest Boat. Two workers are in the foreground working on the curved horizontal planks.
Description: Next step in the construction of the dragger seems to be adding the ribs. To the right of the photo is the framing of the keel. In the foreground, work seems to be on working with horizontal curved planks.
Description: This fourth in the building series is a view of the inside construction. Significant progress has been made in this photo from the third in the series. Temporary braces are holding the framing in place.
Description: This is the third in the series depicting the construction of the largest dragger by tonnage. It looks like it's the shaping of the keel and there are four curved pieces of wood in place, the frames.
Description: This photo is one of a series depicting the steps of constructing the largest dragger by tonnage. In this picture, there is a crane to the left and the bow of the "Silas McLoon" on the right. Ralph Stanley said the Silas McLoon was a wet well lobster smack. Her hold was full of holes so they kept the lobsters in water. Silas was bought by Beal and Bunker in the 1950's. They plugged up all the holes and used her to carry hake which they bought at Cranberry Island and took the hake to Vinalhaven to the canning factory. Buster Rice of Cranberry Island was Captain at that time. This was about 1953. [show more]
Description: This picture was taken at Southwest Boat of the largest dragger being built at Southwest Boat Corp. The keel has been stretched. Ralph Stanley said this was the Judith Lee Rose. Notice the wharf on the side has been planked over to give some protection from the wind. This is a winter picture because there is snow on the ground. Workmen worked outdoors in all kinds of weather.
Description: 1930's Islesford Ferry (double-ended) run by Captain Burt Spurling. Ralph Stanley said he had a schooner named Elva L. Spurling, named after his daughter. One time he was knocked overboard by the main boom and the dorries were tied down on deck. Ralph couldn't remember how they got him back. There is an oil painting of his schooner in the Boston Marine Society. Boat-like barge to the port side of the ferry Paul Stubing referred to as a concession in which fisherman kept gear and bait. The reverse side of the photo had this list of names: 1C399 Elisha Bunker boat 1C728 Hessenbrook - Sutton's Island Capt. Frank Faulkingham Islesford Ferry - boat named "Restless" Lone Wolf in Harbor - Harvard Beal 492 Rosemary - Thorpe Estate, Greening Island (on the right behind those people) Faraway - Estes Family, Greening Island [show more]
Description: The back of the photo has this identifying information: wharf in the distance is one built in 1912 to serve Fort Baldwin; lighthouse is Fort Popham Light; house at right is on Gilbert Head, Long Island; and the Kennebec passes just behind it Boats are in a cove which, except at low tide, passes around the island.
Description: This photo is of Sardine Carriers from a stern view so the names are identifiable. Working from right to left the names are Helen McColl, Surfman, A.T. Haynes. Paul Stubing said the A.T. Haynes was a former schooner made into a supply boat carrying barrels, oil and coal. Ralph Stanley said the A.T. Haynes was used as a freighter carrying cans and supplies to the canneries. The Surfman was owned by the Addison Packing Co. of Southwest Harbor. The A.T.Haynes was built in Manset about 1869. Eventually she was hauled up between the coal wharf and town dock. She stayed there quite awhile until a group of fisherman bought her. They built a house, a rough shed, to store their bait in. Then she was sold to fishermen in Bass Harbor and used for the same purpose. She eventually was hauled out in a little cove by Crockett Point and probably parts of her are still there. [show more]
Description: This photo shows two punts on floats built by owners for $12-$15 each. There are two lobster boats tied up on the left side of the floats and the stern of another lobster boat in view on the right side of the floats. At the head of the floats are several sardine vessels tied up.
Description: This is a photo of sardine carriers stored and overhauled at Southwest Boat. In the foreground are lobster boats tied up and skiffs built in the 40's and 50's in McKinley-Bernard by three different people. Paul Stubing added that one man in Bernard built skiffs for hotels at Moosehead Lake and other places and charged $12.50 apiece. Ralph Stanley thought 1M12 was either built by Roger Rich or Bob Rich. He wasn't sure about the other boat - the nearer one. " Looks like a Raymond Bunker boat but I'm not sure." [show more]
Description: Sardine carriers (formerly coasting schooner "Lewis R. French") made into cannery boat carrying supplies. Supply boats picked up oi and other itemsl from canneries. Paul Stubing indicated that the William Underwood was "practically a new sardine carrier". Lewis R. French at this time was used as a freighter, the other two are sardine carriers. Ralph Stanley said the Lewis R. French is now used as a schooner out of Rockland or Camden area and that she is a very old boat. She was restored by Captain John Foss and is used as a cruising schooner out of Rockland (information added by Rosamond Rea Oct. 2012) [show more]
Description: This is a photo of a dragger being finished off at Southwest Boat Corp. The name of the dragger is not known. There are six workers busy at their respective jobs on the deck of this dragger.
Description: The "Bonaventure" and "Hornet" tied up in front of Southwest Boat Corp with Manset Maine Supply Company building to the right of the port bow. It appears to be high tide. Paul Stubing indicated that Hinckley bought out Southwest Boat Corp in the summer of 1937. Ralph Stanley indicated that 'Bonaventure" was built at SW Boat Corp. around 1941 and owned by the Novello family of Gloucester, Massachusetts. So was the 'Hornet", owned by Harvard Beal. The building which reads Manset Marine Supply Co. was the old Mills Coal Wharf and was owned at this time by SW Boat. The house and barn on the left is gone now. That was owned by Mary C. Parker, one of the Clark descendants. [show more]
Description: This is a photo of the "Old Coast Guard" station in Southwest Harbor which Stubing said was replaced in the mid-forties because the "Baby Rose" is in the background and she was brought back and refitted as a dragger. (Grounded out at town dock. ) The vessel "Sylvina Beal" is in the foreground with its war time # still on board. This dragger was built by a Southwest Habor boatyard. Ralph Stanley said... The boat at the town dock ( only half visible) on the far left is the "Rosemary" of Greenings Island which was owned by the Thorpe estate. Old Raymond Reed worked for them. The boat at Beal's dock, Sylvina W. Beal, is now in Eastport rigged as a schooner taking people on sailing trips. The Coast Guard boat at the far right is a 38 ft. pickett boat. Many of these were built at Hinckley's during World War II. The boat at Beal's float (on the outside) belonged to Clifford Stanley. The other two boats, Ralph couldn't identify. [show more]
Description: Rhode Island sardine carrier finished off at Southwest Boat Corporation. Its name is a question. Looking at the photo, the words Rhode Island appear on the stern of the vessel on the right. In the interview with Paul Stubing, he commented that Southwest Boat Corporation built a lot of draggers and referred to this boat as a dragger, as well as " Bonaventure". The vessel Graylin(g?) is also in the photo and the picture seems to have been taken from Beal's Wharf. Ralph Stanley indicated that the boat on left side of picture tied up to the float was built by Bob Rich. The other boat at this dock is a Cranberry Island boat. The "U & I" is in the background by the mast of that outside sardine boat. The little lobster boat in that same neighborhood was owned by Perry Lawson and went ashore and "stove up" shortly after that. The boat at the town dock (the middle float) was built by Rich Brothers (Frank and Ulysses). Tud Bunker was the Captain. [show more]
Description: "Old Salt" EX Gee Jay This is a power Ketch which was designed by John Alden and built by Harvey Gamage in 1936. She is 42' 3" and was owned by Norris C. Pierson. There are three other sailing vessels anchored off what appears to be the Manset shore. The Spahr cottage is in the background.
