A.T. Haynes and Osprey
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
According to Paul Stubing, the "A.T. Haynes" was a schooner, then became a factory boat. She eventually "died" on the flats just above Bobby Rich's place. He went on to describe other aspects of the photograph. The "Osprey" was a Stonington. ME sardine carrier which has a war-time number (204370) identifying her as an American vessel. He indicated that the war-time # was relative to the state. The numbers were sanded off after the war and replaced with regulation 4" x 6" letters. Both vessels are tied up in Southwest Harbor, Maine, near Beal's Wharf. On the left side of the picture, gas pumps adn a larger tank are visible. According to James Warren's "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000", Osprey was built at Dennysville in 1902 and had a length of 48.8, a depth of 6.5, gross ton 19 and net ton 11. She was affiliated with the Union Sardine Co. in Lubec and the Addison Packing Co. in Southwest Harbor. Ralph Stanley indicated that the "Osprey"was a sardine carrier built in Milbridge. He went on to say that the "A.T. Haynes" was a schooner built in Manset in 1869. At one time she was owned down to Frenchboro but at the time of this photo she was owned by someone in Lubec and was a freighter carrying supplies to canneries. [show more]

Description:
Paul Stubing said that this photograph was of a Bernard wharf around 1946. The date on the back is July 29, 1946. There are lobster traps piled on the wharf. There is a working lobster boat next to the wharf on the right side of the picture. There is a square punt tied to the ladder on the same side of the wharf. There is a boat on the left side of the picture which is partially visible. In the bottom right is a lobster car grounded out. The boat at the dock belongs to Clarence Harding and he is on the boat. This is the boat that rescued Ralph Stanley's dad when he was adrift by Mt. Desert Rock. The temperature had dropped to below zero that night and blew a gale and the only protection was a canvas hood, spray hood, on the boat. (There is a full account of this event in Ralph Stanley's Tales of a Maine Boatbuilder.) Ralph said the boat which is grounded out is owned by Merle Black. [show more]

Boats Beached in a Southwest Harbor Cove
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this begins a series of six pictures depicting boats up on the shore in a Southwest Harbor cove. This looks like the cove at the head of the harbor by the Western Way condominiums. There is part of a house visible in the upper right hand corner. Another house is seen in the woods above the stabilizing stern sail in the second boat from the left of the photograph. There are seven vessels beached for cleaning. Two people are visible working on the hull of the first boat from the left. There is a punt beached off the bow of the same vessel. There is another man visible walking towards the bow of the fourth vessel from the left. Ralph Stanley indicated in an interview with A. L. Welles that hull # 1L148 belonged to Carleton Gilley and was built by Paul Patton in Ellsworth. Charles Gilley owned and worked for Mrs. Lyman on Sutton's. He believes the punt is a Farley punt. Hull #1M551 (third boat from the left) is the first boat Ralph Stanley built (1951) and it was this boat that was owned by Charles Gilley. [show more]

Welles that he thought this boat belonged to Roger Rich who was probably one of the men standing in the photo. Moving from the left side of the photograph to the right, Ralph thought the first person was Charlie Gilley, the third person, Harold Alley, and the fifth person, Paul Faulkingham. He thought the sixth might be Roger Rich. Sunny Stanley's head is just visible, second from the right. Ralph Stanley is going to try to bring Sunny Stanley in to add details. [show more]

Cousin's Yard in East Blue Hill
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this is a photograph of Cousin's Yard in East Blue Hill Bay. There is a smelt tent in the background which had been pulled ashore. This type of tent was used in winter for ice fishing. Fish were put in box outside the tent. The custom died out in 1950's as pay for smelt wasn't sufficient. Stubing went on to explain about the saltwater and freshwater smelt tents. He said they used grain bags to cover a 1 -1/12 inch frame. There were runners underneath and a trap door. There was also a limber pole to hold line - the line dropped through. They had at least two pairs of woolen gloves. A blacksmith would use scrap metal to make a stove (square or round). A chimney would go up through the roof. They would make the chimney as high as possible. Ralph said the same boat which is hauled out is the one pictured in the Winter Harbor photos. Ralph says this may not be the Cousin's Yard. He'd have to go over there and look. [show more]

Draggers "Helen McColl", "Woiee" and "Hornet"
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this is a photograph of the vessels "Helen McColl", "Woiee" and "Hornet". He said that this was all in wartime. He went on to explain that draggers/offshore fishermen couldn't leave until full sunrise for the first few years of the war. Lobstermen and fishermen had the same rule but ignored it . The rule said that fishermen could go out a half hour after sunrise and return a half hour before sunset. After the first two years, enforcement was more lax. This picture has many subjects. There are two rowboats turned over on the float in the foreground. Behind them are the "Hornet" and a lobster boat with # 1 D 867 on its port side. Eva Grace
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
Description:
Paul Stubing said this is a photograph of the "Eva Grace". She was a sardine carrier without hydraulic pumping equipment. The view is looking towards Long Island. The vintage of the cars to the left of the photograph suggest that this could have been taken in the late 40's - early 50's. The "Eva Grace" is on the right side of the photo in dry dock with a man working on her port side. To the left of "Eva Grace" is a vessel with the id# 1 G 883. This boat resembles the traditional lobster boat style. It looks as if this picture was taken in a boat yard. According to James L. Warren's "Maine Sardine Industry History 1875-2000", "Eva Grace" was built in East Machias, Maine, in 1930 and was 60 feet long. She drew 5.6 ft. Her gross ton was 34 and her net ton was 22. The man is wearing a checked cap with a visor and has a pencil resting on his left ear. There is second hammer stuck in one pocket and a folding wooden ruler in another. On the back of the photo the caption reads "Fastening the stern timbers of a large fishing dragger, at Bass Harbor, Maine" in black ink and the name John Varnam is written in blue ink. Description:
This photo is a companion to #007.19.111. Both were taken with a telephoto lens which Stubing claims Ballard decided not to use again. This picture appears to be taken from farther away than the preceding picture because more is visible in the foreground. It is interesting to compare the cloud formations between the two pictures. In addition to the foreground details, more of the wharf buildings are visible in this picture on the left side of the photo. This picture offers a clearer view of the scow mentioned in photo 007.19.111. [show more]

Description:
Paul Stubing said Ballard used a telephoto lense on a 4x5 Kodak and added he didn't use telephoto again. The schooner "Rhode Island" is closest to Beal's. Then there are at least 13 large fishing boats, sardine carriers, tied up to the floats and/or rafted together. There is some type of harbor buoy in the foreground which looks like a "bell" buoy. In the background there are wharves and docks. Ralph Stanley said the scow by the lookout for Beal's had a house on it which is where Lawrence Newman stored his salt pollock. They would sell the pollock to the stores in town. [show more]

Description:
This photo shows the Gloucester draggers in Southwest Harbor - perhaps to avoid weather. The boats seem to be tied up to the Stanley Fish Wharf on the Manset side of the harbor looking towards Greenings Island. Ralph Stanley said the draggers used to come in to the harbor during the winter. They were fishing out by Mt. Desert Rock . They were red fishing. The motorboat in the foreground, the double-ender, was owned by J.L. Stanley Fisheries. She was built on Cranberry Islands. The wharf in the foreground was originally built by Horace Durgin around 1850. Some of this structure is now part of the Madeira (Tyson) dock. Harold Tyson had the house built (not seen in this picture). This house was designed by Gilchrist who had also designed the Ellsworth City Hall in 1933. [show more]

Jarvis Newman's father's peapod and dragger built by Sim Davis
Mount Desert Island Historical Society
  • Image, Photograph, Black-and-White Photograph
  • Ballard, W.H.
  • 1944
Description:
Paul Stubing indicated that this was a wartime photo. The war numbers are visible on the vessel hulls. On the right of the picture is the Southwest Boat Corporation's pile driver. The "Rosemarie" with a War # of 4A170 is tied next to the peapod. The "Rosemarie" came from Provincetown and Ralph Stanley thinks that Bill Sklaroff, owner of Stanley Fisheries, might have been part owner. SW Boat did quite a lot of work on the "Rosemarie". Ralph said the double-ender (along side the "Rosemarie") did not belong to Jarvis's father. It belonged to Cliff Robbins. Over the top of the "Sea Fox", you can see the dragger "U & I". The boat farthest away with the wartime numbers in white is the "Dorothy and Edith" built by Farnham Butler, Mt. Desert Yacht Yard, in the 1940's. Derby Stanley and his family had this boat built. He had been a rum runner too. Derby's son Warren and Ralph Ramsdell were overcome by coal gas and died on that boat in Frenchboro. Ralph Stanley said the "Sea Fox" was built at Southwest Boat for a man in Provincetown who had come from Portugal. He was known to be a liquor smuggler. There has been a book written about him. She hailed from Provincetown. The owner eventually returned to Portugal. In back of the pile driver, is a Nova Scotian dragger. Ralph thinks Bill Howell may have owned her before he owned the "Rhode Island". [show more]
