When he offered to pay I said no but when pressed I said my fee would be a box of cigars. Jim called me from the humidor at Dunhills in NYC. When I told him the brand I preferred he said "Holy Shit, I should have paid your fee!" Barbara Danielson bought the house and hired Barb Sassaman and me to renovate it. They were introduced to me by Jan's brother, David Milliken. David worked for me briefly years earlier and we got along well. The Russells wanted an expanded home and we wanted to create a project that both accommodated their need to expand and ultimately looked like it had always been there. I think we accomplished that quite well as most people did not notice the change. Bob Bond was the builder. As an interesting side note. The Russells hired Dennis Bracale to do some landscaping and he volunteered to do a further expansion on their home. The work was done by Steve Demers a former COA design student who later worked in our office on the Gilley Museum project. So the Russell house has become a two generation project. I had done a renovation of a kitchen of a house he owned in an earlier life nearby and when he asked me to help work up a new home on land he owned between the beautiful Grosvenor Atterbury church and the Greenrock staging area I suggested that his new home might be mostly big barn and work area for his heavy machinery passion with a smaller, functional home attached. When the time came to begin the project I was overwhelmed with other projects and recommended the Surrey firm of Bingham and Woodward to do the project and helped during the construction supervision phase. I think it came out well and have since enjoyed many wonderful dinners in the "barn" which has become more of an art gallery than workshop. [show more] | |

We got a good sized grant for the Fund for Post Secondary Education to develop our curriculum. Part of the program was for the advanced students to do pro bono work in the community. The greenhouse was a student designed project and the site analysis done for a new Information building at the head of the island was another. Keith Miller the then superintendent paid the our class' token fee with a bag of silver dollars. We bought a radio. We did some research and learned that groups of 8 or less will take responsibility for their living environment but more than that number ignore their responsibilities to others. So we designed seven separate 8 bed apartments interconnected. The building form followed the real estate divisions of the of the old property lines, the geological shape of the land at the entrance to the Turrets and was meant to evoke images of older 19th century barns and stables and work buildings. The courtyard faced true south and brought fresh air and sun into every room. We came to MDI to work at the newly founded College of the Atlantic in 1974. I did any number of small projects and helped renovate the Turrets during those years but always wanted to do something of substance for them. When we returned from an extended "residency" working as an associate in the Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown firm in Philadelphia, Lou Rabineau, the then president of the college, asked me to design a new dormitory for them. They had come a long way since our earlier struggling days and, I think Lou had a great deal to do with putting them on the right track. Todd Stanley, John Gordon, Wells Bacon and John De Fazio ( a Venturi colleague) all helped with this first large project. I did some research and found that groups of people in units of 8 or less were aware and cared for their common environment so we divided the dormitory into 7, 8 bed living units- each with kitchens common rooms and separated bathrooms on each floor. We oriented the clusters at the entrance to the Turrets where the old carriage house and servant facilities were once placed and treated the building form in the same detail and scale. We prepared the rooms so each got direct sunlight and fresh air and all opened onto a common courtyard. The single rooms were designed to code minimum doubles and the double rooms to code minimum triples which allowed the college to expand from the 56 beds used on a regular basis to a 74 bed capability in an emergency. All of this worked! The building has been the home for close to 2000 young students and survived in excellent form with very little maintenance. One of my proudest accomplishments ever. She asked me to prove it and I hired Peter Knuppel a good local lighting designer to test the light. the data was dramatic and Peggy and David Rockefeller asked me to design a replacement greenhouse not only for the AARG but also to add wings for Thuja and the Asticou gardens which they seemed to think would require support in the future. We chose the Rough Brothers, a Cincinnati company that supplied excellent greenhouses for college and public gardens around the country. The project went off without a hitch and the greenhouses have been in constant use ever since. The seedlings are no longer leggy. The McAlpine Farm complex is now the center for the Land And Garden Preserve a non-profit organization responsible for the AARG, Asticou, and Thuja Gardens and 1,000 acres of parkland and trails including Little Long Pond. It was a pleasure and education working for Bob Venturi and John Rauch as the Project Manager on this project. The stock market took a dive when the bids were due and this project came in one million dollars under budget. The professors were delighted when we used the money to upgrade their laboratory equipment. This was the only class 1000 clean room I was involved with and I enjoyed doing the drawings of the entry structure and overseers room myself. Tom Fisher was the project manager for the very complicated construction phase and the Boston firm Payette Associates expert laboratory designers were our partners on this project. As complicated as anything I have ever done and a great preparation for the two hospital additions we did in later years. I liked this kind of complicated work. After this project the Venturi firm was asked to do two major projects for Dartmouth. [show more] | ||

The Committee chose to build two of the three functions and included a mechanical system for the eventual third (exercise) wing. Carl Haskell was the project manager on this one. The McLeans are in the top 5. Two older Philadelphia people who found each other later in life and joined their big families. They were happy and kind and wonderful to work with. Don had found some property that was thought to be inaccessible but once we had hiked to the site the view was magnificent looking down into all of Northeast Harbor and across to Greenings and Southwest. Harris Hyman, my partner and friend was an excellent civil engineer and he worked out a precipitous drive up the side of the mountain to their ideal site. We decided that, while the view was excellent from there we did not want to harm the view looking back toward their home so I suggested we build the home then only sparingly prune tree limbs for the view. As the land was so steep I also suggested we wrap the grade level and porches and support columns in study western red cedar lattice made to silver out and blend into the surrounding forest texture. This was the first time I tried this and have used it often since. The mottled texture of the surface diminishes the visual impact of a structure on its surround. Something, I think, the early shingle style architects tried often. I was a full time employee working for Venturi, Scott Brown in Philadelphia at the time and did this project at night and on weekends. Done for Lisa Heyward and Jock Crothers. Lisa's father was an architect and she knew exactly what she wanted and where. our job was to make it attractive and buildable. I think it worked. this house was built about 4 feet in front of a deteriorated home they first lived in. Once completed they tore the home down and built a small guest house in its place. The contractor foreman on this project was very divisive and made the construction phase difficult but we persevered and it came out well and very close to the budget. I think Lisa was disappointed in the debates we had with the contractors on the job trying to get them to keep to their original commitments. I wish I knew how to make the process less difficult for the client when this happens. Todd Stanley was an excellent help on this project and the guest house is really mostly his doing. I think he sold drugs in his early years and made enough money to buy a bar named Geddy's Pub on Main Street in Bar Harbor. He had something like 70 different altercations with customers when he was trying to clean up the place and never lost one. In one incident he was shot in the back by a shotgun welding neighbor and he survived. He liked me and Helen for some reason and came to the office with his profits one year and said that, while he did not have enough money to buy land on the water and build a house, he did have enough to build a house and would I design a house boat that he might build and moor off shore in various harbors around MDI. This way he might have his water view. We visited with John Letcher of Aerohydro engineers and with Jock Williams at his boatyard to engineer the hull. It was a sweet little project but Gerry being Gerry by the time we solved the problem he was off on the next adventure. [show more] | ||

| House at Irish Point for Steven Rockefeller Northeast Harbor Library Description: Bridge sketch, sketches, plot plan, floor plans, elevations, mechanical Roc's Comments: Steven Rockefeller and his wife, Dorie, asked me to design the Gilley Museum (see 118). We had a great time working together on that building and in 1990 (when we were contemplating moving back to MDI from Philadelphia) I received a letter asking if I would design him a new home on Swans Island. Steven had remarried Barbara Bellows and they wanted a summer home built on the land that Steven had simply camped on and cleared the lower branches of the spruce trees to maintain the meadow, encourage the breezes and discourage the mosquitoes. When I asked Steven and Barbara what they were looking for in a summer house Barbara said in her charming southern accent " Roc, we like a summer house with dogs and kids and screen doors that slam." I knew exactly what she meant and prepared a series of pencil sketches that zeroed in on a really nice white clapboard farmhouse indicative of the Greek and Gothic revival structures found all over Swans and the western side of Mt Desert Island. We went thru very few iterations before arriving at the final design. The house purposely has 4 different exterior elevations. The entry or East elevation is the regional revival style facade, the South elevation has a more "craftsman/sea captains" appearance. The West elevation is meant to be the " summer house cottage" side when viewed from the water. And the North side is our current, funky Downeast side. There is a wonderful big bathtub that aligns with a big southern window looking out over the pink sand beach. This place and the clients are all a very happy memory. [show more] | |

Met with the McPhersons and designed this elegant and efficient home for them on a very bad piece of property on the side of the hill in Seal Harbor. They had sewer and water lines running over the property and there was a drainage swale that cut it in half. I organized all the town utility infrastructure and used the intermittent stream as a land feature and defining form in the design. I really love this little solution and think the design is one of the best I have done. Unfortunately the McLeans hired Bill Shaw a local builder who took my COA class in Architectural Design in the past. Roc's comments about Pavilion project: Park Visitor Center is a travesty. ANP Sup. Paul Haertel asked us for suggestions. We redid the parking lot for Explorer Bus access and built an information "kiosk" or gateway to the 57 stairs that climb up to the disappointing Visitor Center in the hope that our Kiosk would: create an iconographic image that previewed other Island Explorer information and bus shelters throughout the island. A wayfinding image that would be recognizable to people who might not speak English: and the Kiosk would answer questions to a good percentage of visitors and save them the climb to an unattractive destination and get them on their way. Wells Bacon and Carla Haskell helped with this project but I did a great deal of the work by myself as I really liked the project and the design. Roc's comments about the Bus Pavilions project: Paul Haertel and Jim Vekasi and Clay Gilley of ANP asked us to design small wayfinding bus shelters for various locations around the island . This is one of them. The idea was to create a visual vocabulary that was evocative of the Acadian region and Park that was similar in appearance to the Visitor Center Pavilion and easily recognizable to foreign and local visitors. Will Fellis and Todd Hardy and Engineer Bill Haney played a big part in realizing this design. [show more] | |

Each half was sold as a separate building. The Scotts, a wonderful older couple from Philadelphia (?) asked us to renovate their half into a more livable summer home. Jeffry Wright and I took on the task with enthusiasm. The carpentry contractors Bond Builders had previously added a colonial addition to the Frenchman Bay side of the half structure that was perfectly functional and paid for. We did not want to intrude on some of the fabulous Queen Ann/ shingle style remaining structure so we created a very complicated addition that appeared consistent with the Queen Ann appearance of the Western or entrance side of the building and consistent with the "colonial" appearance of the Frenchman's Bay Eastern facade. He hired me to help him gain planning board permission, design additions that were not built on the Thorndike Residence (a good thing) and prepare an accessibility report for the state describing every ADA function available in his new motel. They owned land on Hodgdon Pond in Seal Cove and first asked me to help them renovate a little old house they lived in as a temporary residence and then asked for the design of a new home closer to the Pond. I should have know that working with a scientist as accomplished as Eva would be no small task. She questioned (with no malice) EVERYTHING. And she wanted to be a part of the process. I did probably twenty different designs and three or four models for them to review. Each one got closer to their dream home. It was a compliment to me that they were so deeply interested in every facet of my work. Eva each time had to start with the exact size and location of the kitchen sink. From there she worked her way out thru the building. They became very close and dear friends and I treasure the time we spent working this dream home out. They love the location of the sink.
