|  The Callendar House Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: The Callendar House was the first summer cottage built of brick in Bar Harbor. When this photograph was taken in 2016, the Jackson Lab owned this structure which is located on the Schooner Head Road just outside of Bar Harbor. The history of Bar Harbor is the history of the rich and famous and the story of the Callendar House fits right into this history. The imposing “cottage” was built in 1901 for Mrs. John Callendar Livingston, a member of the prominent and incredibly prosperous Livingston family, by Fredrick Savage. The structure was Savage’s most formal design and also the most expensive (partly because just before it was completed in 1901, the entire building burnt leading to a near complete rebuilding). Savage, himself, was a native of Northeast Harbor and the vast majority of his work consisted of cottages and hotels, showing the rise of Bar Harbor’s place as a “summer colony”. Savage built cottages in many styles including several prominent Queen Anne and Shingle Style structures showcasing the dominant design trends of the late 19th century and early 20th century. The Callendar House, however, can be seen as firmly colonial revival in design and was the first summer “cottage” built with brick. At the time of its construction it was praised by the Bar Harbor Record for both its refinement and its modernity. She opened Sawyer’s Lobster Pound, named after a former beau. When the relationship broke up, Gill renamed the place after herself. |

|  Grulich - Anne Theresa Grulich (1954 -2022) Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: Anne Grulich was one of the most ardent supporters of the Digital Archive. As an archivist for the Great Cranberry Island Historical Society, she was one of the first to adopt the Digital Archive for her organization, and later worked hard to convince other organizations to adopt it as well. As one of the first users of the technology, she made numerous contributions to its development in the form of ideas for how to make it better. She was fierce in her efforts to see the Digital Archive succeed and deserves much credit for its eventual success. Anne was sweet, kind, and thoughtful and a pleasure to work with. Her obituary from the Mount Dessert Islander follows. Anne Grulich died on March 6, 2022, in Durango, Colo. She was born Jan. 24, 1954, the seventh of eight children, and grew up with her cheerful, active family in Crestwood, N.Y., and Greenwich, Conn. During her husband’s service in the Navy, Anne created happy homes for her own young family in Hawaii and Italy. She was a wonderful and loving mother to her sons, Luke and Andrew. Upon return to the States, the family eventually settled in Eastern Maryland, where Anne graduated, summa cum laude, with a degree in anthropology/archaeology from St Mary’s College, followed by an MA in American studies with material culture and museum studies certificates from the University of Maryland. Her subsequent work spanned a full spectrum of hands-on art and artifact processing to policy, planning, systems development, research, writing, education, communications and publications for museums and other collections in Maryland and New Mexico. Anne and her husband moved to Mount Desert Island in 2011. She enhanced the archives, coordinated grants, conducted research, designed exhibits and contributed to publications at the Cranberry Island Historical Society as well as consulting with other area organizations. She was deeply pleased to learn that the Cranberry Island Historical Society has named its archive in her honor. Anne and Gerald relocated to Durango, Colo., in 2020, where her bright and outgoing personality won her a host of new friends, and where the landscape allowed her to hike, bike and cross-country ski to her heart’s content. Anne was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the end of January of this year. She died at her home in Durango. She is survived by her son Andrew, brothers Patrick Dowling and Bill Dowling, sister Margaret Wells and her husband, John, sister-in-law Barbara Meyers and numerous loving cousins. Her family and friends mourn her passing and miss her dearly. [show more] | |

Three Chimneys, 141 Clark Point Road, is visible behind and to the left of the trees. With all the visual aids from SWHPL 5525, and repeated searches, archivists could not locate the rocks in the old photographs or find the exact place where the people were sitting. The rocks were probably covered or removed when the land was cleared for the cottage and drive. |

The description that follows is from an Ellsworth American article on July 17, 2019 by Stephen Rappaport (see link below). ### At 2 p.m., about an hour after the cruising division began its race past Sutton Island, 15 Friendship sloops lined up between Clark Point and Greening Island for a race that would carry the fleet out into Great Harbor, to Spurling Rock off the corner of Great Cranberry Island, then to Bear Island off Northeast Harbor, the can buoy at the entrance to Somes Sound and back to a finish where the race began. A light sea breeze picked up as the race progressed then died with the fleet packed together off Bear Island, race committee chairman Scott Martin said Monday morning. As the tide turned, the breeze picked up giving the fleet a good race to the finish. About two hours after the start, first across the finish line was a local boat, Albert Neilson’s Hieronymous, built by Ralph Stanley in 1962 and still homeported in Southwest Harbor. Close behind was another local boat, Alice E, believed to have been launched in 1899 and sailed daily by Downeast Friendship Sloop Charters in Southwest Harbor. The Woods Hole, Mass.-based Hegira, launched in 1980, finished third. According to Martin, who raced on his own Eden, Mount Desert Island is home to the largest fleet of Friendship sloops — about a half-dozen — anywhere. “We’re blessed,” he said Monday. Martin hopes to start a regular series of Wednesday afternoon races for Friendship sloops after the upcoming Rockland rendezvous. “It will be very informal,” he said. “No handicaps.” [show more] |

Though the view appears very wide, it's only about 90° from end to end. It seems wider because I shot it with a 200mm lens to get the detail along the shore with minimal water and sky. I stitched the panorama from 17 separate images taken left to right, each frame rotated 5° to the right of the previous one. Yesterday I saw this same scene while driving around to take the pictures posted here, but when I arrived at this spot the sun was too high and I didn't have my tripod with me. This morning I got up before dawn and set up my tripod on the snow-covered dock at 6:15 AM. Then I waited in the bitter cold for the sun to rise. To the naked eye, the space does not look nearly this bright. The first image (angle view) is a four-slice panorama with a 140° field of view. It is a composite of 12 different frames. The second image (straight-on view) is a six-slice panorama with a 190° field of view. It is a composite of 18 different frames. Both images were shot at f/8, ISO 400, with three different exposures for each slice. Exposures ranged from 10 seconds for the main room to 1/25th second for the chandelier. [show more] |

|  Lantern Walk and Story Telling at the Causeway Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: Photographer George Soules posted the following on his blog for Nov 16, 2013: Last night the Southwest Harbor Public Library on Mount Desert Island held a Lantern Walk. "As the days start to grow shorter we start to think about light and ways we can celebrate it. A lantern walk is an observance of the changing season." In preparation for this event, all were invited to come to the library the Thursday before to make lanterns. Janice was there as a volunteer helping the children glue colored paper onto tall glass wide mouth jars. On Friday, participants met at 5:00 PM at the High Road parking lot in Southwest Harbor and walked down Causeway Lane with lanterns lit. Then, aided by the glow of a full moon, they carefully navigated the path down to the water and gathered on the rocks for some storytelling before heading back. Janice and I tagged along with the hope of getting some pictures that captured the feel of this magical evening. I used a Canon 5D Marl II DSLR mounted on a tripod with a Canon 24-70mm lens at f/2.8. I exposed the scene for 2 seconds at ISO 1600. Thanks to the moonlight, the surrounding area was nicely exposed as well. [show more] |

|  Duck Brook Motor Bridge Southwest Harbor Public Library Description: To get this photo, I waited until late fall after the leaves were gone. I parked at the Holiday Inn which was closed for the season and walked across Route 3 to the metal guard rail along the section of road that crosses Duck Brook. Once in the ravine, I located a spot at the edge of the water that I thought had the clearest view of the bridge, and even from there I could only see two of the three arches. The left and right arches each span 89', but in the photo, the left arch is completely obscured by evergreens. I set up a tripod with a Canon 5D Mark III camera and a Canon 24mm tilt/shift lens. With the camera mounted in landscape orientation, I shifted the lens all the way down to capture the lower part of the scene and all the way up to catch the top of the bridge. Because the ravine was deep in shadow while the inner part of the center arch was in full sunlight, I had to take multiple exposures ranging from a half second to 125th second, which is seven full stops, at f/11 with ISO set to 50. Later in Lightroom and Photoshop, I stitched the lower and upper halves and manually blended the exposures. Note also that I focused on the bridge, but also took a shot focused on the large rock in the foreground and blended-in parts of that image to get more depth of field. - George Soules [show more] | |

The third visible house, number 17, was built by builder Robie Melvin Norwood Jr. for himself in 1924. Rebecca’s daughter Nellie “Nell” Rebecca (Carroll) Thornton built at 23 High Road in 1922. Another daughter, Alice (Carroll) Young built at 38 High Road in 1907.
