A brief overview and assessment project reviewing maritime disaster and vessel abandonment near Acadia National Park. Provides a synopsis of known ship wrecks, a GIS database with geospatial information, and a model of where maritime cultural resources might be found. Field interviews, archaeologically corroborated known ship wrecks, photographs of wreck remains, references, bibliography. Field interviews include Charlene Allen, Sheldon Goldthwaite, Ralph Stanley, Mike Pinkham, and Phil Whitney among others. Description: Booklet "Ralph Stanley" (notes used by Ralph Stanley as speaker at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the Islesford Historical Society) with two vivid descriptions of the sinking of the two-masted schooner KATE NEWMAN after its collision with the three-masted schooner STEPHEN HARDING off of Long Branch, NJ during a severe storm Feb 1880. One description is by Capt. Stephen Harding of the STEPHEN HARDING, the other by William H. Rea, sole survivor of the KATE NEWMAN crew. The crew apparently was from Tremont. Description: Luder-16 racing on MDI makes a comeback after 30 years. Owners include Alec Goriansky, Jane Zirnkilton, and Alan McIlhenny. The boats were built in the 1930's by Luders Marine Construction Co. in CT.
Description: The Friendship sloop Endeavor sunk off Rockland Harbor on July 24, 2001 while racing in the three-day Friendship Sloop Days Annual Homecoming. Divers searched for the wreck for a month until she was found 70 feet down on the bottom of the harbor by using sidescan SONAR on August 18th a short distance from where she went down. Efforts to raise “Endeavor” were unsuccessful until Southwest Harbor captain Douglas E. Beal Jr. (1952-), aboard his “Salvage III” brought her up on Friday, August 24 and brought her back home. This sequential set of photos shows the process of Endeavor being lifted out of the water by Salvage III and brought back to Southwest Harbor for inspection and repair.
