Description: Transcription of Eleanor Mayo's Interview with Lillian Rich Reed (1889-1973). The interview took place on January 16, 1967. Lillian Rich Reed was the daughter of John M. and Charlotte Kelley Rich, the sister of Emily Rich Trask, and the mother of Emma Reed Richards.
Description: There are two folders labeled "Bar Harbor High School, Fred Savage". The first folder is marked as containing blueprints. His early studies flirt with a rather more flamboyant expression, but he finally gravitates to the more traditional composition This classical design for the town's High School is very similar to the design of many local schools throughout the nation in the early 20th century. The health and educational reform principles of adequate light and ventilation are clearly incorporated with ample windows in each room. The elements of design are typical for this type of Colonial revival composition. A rusticated base is topped with a solid and strong masonry brick Facade. It is further punctuated with groupings of large windows all painted a light color. This composition is capped with a strong projecting cornice. Preble $400 on Schooner Sea Flower and $700 on outfits for a fishing voyage from Tremont to the Magdalen Islands [Quebec] and back to port of discharge commencing the week May 2, 1854. Description: School master's desk. Top lifts to reveal space for books and pencils. One drawer at top with white knob. Two doors with shelves behind. One drawer at bottom missing pull. Decorative cut base. Lender info - used by Lynam Smith during the 1850s when he was the teacher in the first school in Pretty Marsh, called "The Little Red Schoolhouse." Lyman Smith also taught in other area schools. Donor is a descendant of Smith.

Description: The white building with the staircase at the left of the watercolor is the building where John Richardson conducted his tailoring business with the Customs House on the second floor. The building in the center of the painting is part of the discarded South Norwood Cove school, presumably now J.T.R. Freeman's home. (It should be noted that what is now the village of Southwest Harbor used to be called South Norwood's Cove.)
