|  Agricultural heritage of the Cranberry Isles Great Cranberry Island Historical Society Description: Research, Jessica Duma, 2014-2016 while an Island Institute Fellow at GCIHS which produced an exhibition, presentations, video, and oral history recordings. Historical and modern day materials pertaining to Duma's Agricultural Heritage of the Cranberry Isles fellowship focusing on farming, agriculture, apples, the Island Ecology project, farm stand, and more in the Town of Cranberry Isles from 19th century to present. Duma worked with mentor Todd Little-Siebold (College of the Atlantic) and used GCIHS and other local historical collections to produce an exhibition, gather oral histories, and record videos of her experiences and research while residing on Great Cranberry Island as a two-year fellow and then served as part-time manager of GCIHS and part-time manager for the CIRT (affordable housing) program for the last year. Ledgers were inherited by donor from his great uncle Lewis Stanley. (See scans on gcihs-nas\photo\Museum Photos\2015.316.2077_SchmidtLedgers and on DVD; ledgers were originally returned to donor August 2015; then all were donated to museum June 2017). Ledger A1: Measures 8.25H x 7: W x .5” thick. First page: George N. Spurling, Cranberry Isles; and [unreadable name below Spurling] Machias Port. Entries run from 1855-1870, with the last four pages dated 1855 pertaining to WatterWitch (Water Witch, Waterwitch, spelling and capitalization varies) stocks and specifics. Account entries recorded for the WatterWitch, Schooner Rozella, and Schooner Caressa. Names mentioned: Walton, Guptill, Haynes, Stanley, Spurling, Ferrin, Wentworth, Young, Saddler, Ladd. Commodities: fish and oil mostly; stocks and figuring notations in pen and pencil by different hands. First page states Schooner Hannah & Abigail bought in Boston May 6th, 1849. First entry is “E.B. Stanley, Cranberry Isles Oct. 9th, 1858 for $21 dollars on account of my share of fish bought on board Sch. WatterWitch this season. Asa [D?] Stanley.” Ledger B2: Measures 8”H x 6.75” W x .5” thick. Inside front cover is written: “Jonas Blood born April 15th, 1774.” First page begins with January 1st 1859 listing sale of butter, pork, and eggs. Ledger records expenses and sales of produce and other items through April 1862 and appears to be written by all the same hand. Label on front cover: Sanborn & Carter, Publishers, Booksellers and Blank Book Manufacturers, No. 55 Exchange Street, Portland, Maine. Small envelope and letter addressed to Mrs. E. B. Stanley, Cranberry Isles, Maine, postmarked Waltham MA, Nov 17/12M/1908 (03?) with 2 cent stamp. Reverse postmark is Cranberry Isles 1908(3)? Begins "North East Harbor, Lindsay,” ends: "Hastily, Carol(?)" Many pages have been cut out from the beginning of this ledger. First entry, is on page 85 and starts: “Boston Dec. 6th 1879 Sch. S.L. Foster. Page 93 is “Boston Dec 14, 1885.” Page 98 deals with the estate of Enoch B. Stanley and Lewis B. Stanley 1903 and continues with various documents and deeds to 1908 (to page 151). Then returns to accounts for the S. L. Foster 1889. Page 176 begins accounts for the Schooner Rozella 1882, then to 1881, and goes back to deeds and correspondence p. 196 for 1908. P. 198 goes back to the Sch. Foster and alternates between accounts re: Foster and Rozella. Two small loose account papers between p. 212 and 213. The ledger goes back and forth between years and schooners and deeds throughout the book. Last pages of ledger date Jan 18, 1913 and begin with “I expressly forbade Lewis to connect the new building with the original fish house of the heirs of E. B. (A) Enoch B. Stanley's tan leather fold-over "The Revised and Improved Collector's Tax Book....Adapted to the Revised Statutes of 1883", by W. W. Bolster, Published Portland: W. H. Stevens & Company, No. 193 Middle Street. Entries from 1890-1892 with categories for real estate, personal property, poll tax, highway tax, a section on school district tax. With three loose handwritten pages inserted. One is list of children for Hannah Lopaus(?) who moved to Mount Desert July 12th 1799 and had 10 children and includes list of 9 children born to Hannah's daughter Nancy Lopauss Richardson Clark, one of whom was Meltiah P. Richardson (spouse of Carrie Stanley Richardson). The second loose page is a petition for a fish weir at Thrumcap for Enoch B. Stanley and W.D.(?) Stanley in January 1891. Preble; very difficult to decipher, many entries not in chronological order, often several years of entries not made in sequential order. (Only exterior and one page of each ledger scanned. ) A= Black leather journal with leather clasp. Property of William P. Preble, Cranberry Isles. 1862 Boston entries payments to individuals, mentions Schooner Commerce, etc. Letter tucked into this notebook in the pocket in the rear of the notebook. Bangor Dec. 20, 1860 to Wm. P. Preble Esq. from Abner Knowles about a balance of $40 he owes the Town of Cranberry Isles. B= Black leather journal with leather clasp. Property of William P. Preble begins with Accounts of Sales Daily starting November 1 running for several months….“Amount of sales for the year 1866 $5,542.58, tax collected 798.97” Note: One large loose ledger sheet folded and stored inside this small ledger D with header WP Preble to Clark & Parker November 18th 1879 lists supplies and hardware of various kinds. E= 1867-1871 small ledger begins with “Wrecked Schooner”, then Schooner von Buren & Owners, information pertaining to the Owners of Quickstep (fractions of ownership by each man?), herring for E. B. Stanley and others, fishing tallies, Schooner Sea Queen, 1871 H. Gilley, 1871 and 1873 Town of CI expenses for Preble services, 1873-1874 miscellaneous and expenses Perley and Russell, 1874 Preble’s expenses for Town of CI business, Accounts of sales to various individuals, with various notations on the front and rear flaps of the ledger. F= 1867 long narrow store ledger with list of cash and credit, tallies of purchases by individuals. G= 1869-1872 long narrow store ledger with list of cash and credit for various dates, and purchases by individuals. H= 1867 & 1878 small narrow tan leather journal. 1867 Schooner C.D. Horton, expenses, sailors/fishermen. Schooner Alice P [or T?]. expenses, sailors. Cranberry Isles Wrecking Company meeting notes January and February 1867. Ledgers of accounts for various individuals. Also a couple of notations re: 1878 & 1879 matters, and 1873 on the last page. Inserted in this ledger H is a Lime Rock Insurance Company policy for $3,000 on the schooner Sea Queen for one year from March 1, 1866 at noon. I= 1877 Collector’s Tax List book – William P. Preble, Esq. Treasurer and Collector of Taxes of the Town of Cranberry Isles, County of Hancock aforesaid. Assessors: A. C. Fernald, J. S. Spurling, and N. S. Spurling. Preble; very difficult to decipher, many entries not in chronological order, often several years of entries not made in sequential order. (Only exterior and one page of each ledger scanned. A= Small marble covered ledger 1836, 1837. Mentions Brig Hannah & Abigail. Fabric goods like calico and cotton, pants and clothing. B= Small tan ledger with blue pages, entries made in very faint pencil. Boston 1849 – payments to individuals. November 28, 1849 lists of quantities of [fish?]. Individual accounts/expenses. Hardware. Provisions. C= 1856 Samuel S. Bunker one of the Surveyors of Highways in the Town of Cranberry Isles. Small ledger lists residents and poll tax for each D= 1855-1856 Brig Factor items, supplies, and expenses, tallies of fish, payments and expenses for sailors/fishermen, mentions lobsters, mention of the Schooner Sea Flower and Quickstep. Entries written in two directions, as if it was used for different years. The only year found so far is 1856 with entry for Nathan Stanley with balance due to Haynes. Lobsters for June 1855. The back of the journal also contains pages for the accounts pertaining to School district No. 2, the Post Office, and for various islanders (not transcribed). Samuel Sanford paid $1.65 to Sargent, Lord & Skillin, Ship Chandlery, Groceries, Fishermen’s outfits and Fishing Supplies, Nos. 8 & 12 Commercial Wharf, Portland, for an illegible item. 2. [undated] Handwritten description of area near Stanley weir, paper was torn and mended at some point. “54 running yards between [Mayos?] and [J. G.?] Stanleys weir. Commencing at J. G. Stanley’s [Bxxxx Pxxx?] or weir and run E. by North 175 yards leaving a boat way between the Thumb and suitable for boats passage in towards the shore and not to extend over 1/3 of the width of passage between the Thrumb Cap & May Pole Point.” Reverse side shows calculations. 3. 1881 (August 16- September 24) handwritten list of quantities [barrels?] of mackerel, herring, and other fish. Reverse shows Graham Co received payment from William Preble Nov. 18, 1881. 4. 1889 (Sept 1889-Oct1890). Handwritten notebook page with header: Estate of Thomas Stanley to William Preble. Lists expenses incurred managing Stanley estate, totaling $906.44. On the reverse side are two seemingly unrelated handwritten notes, written in different directions on the paper. One is a statement signed by William P. Preble July 6, 1892 that someone has been trespassing and taking berries without permission; and that after this date, nothing should be removed from his lands or property without consent.
